Giuseppe Grazioli and Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi - Marinuzzi: Sinfonia In La - Suite Siciliana (2017)

Gino Marinuzzi (Palermo, 1882 – Milan, 1945) was, as the few surviving discographic recordings testify, the greatest orchestral conductor of the 20th century. He was a humanist and bibliophile; an ardent writer, memoirist and epistolographer. At an early age he moved to Milan and to Rome, but never stopped speaking his own language, improperly defined a dialect. From Monteverdi to the 18th century of Paisiello, Cimarosa and Mozart, from Beethoven to Spontini, Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti and Verdi, from Berlioz and other French composers to Wagner and Strauss, from Puccini to Giordano, Mascagni and Pizzetti, and to the music of the avant-garde (Stravinsky, Alfano, Respighi, Bloch, Honegger, Mossolov, Orff), he spanned the entire repertory always leaving his definitive mark. But it is still not sufficiently known that Marinuzzi was one of the most significant composers of the whole 20th century: his musical style was so modern as to disconcert even a daring composer like Puccini, who knew him well and owed much to him. At the same time his musical skills, acquired during his studies at Palermo Conservatory, alongside his close friend Giuseppe Mulè, with eminent teachers like Alberto Favara and Guglielmo Zuelli, gave him such a profound and thorough grasp of counterpoint as to confound all those that try to analyze it. However, an important trait of great art is the ability to conceal the technical work from those who witness it (ars est celare artem): and so the bold music of Marinuzzi – small in quantity – flows with an extraordinary naturalness.
