Georg Philipp Telemann - cpo friends have long known - is always good for surprises. He was a diligent and also important opera composer who wrote about 35 operas for the Hamburg Opera between 1721 and 1733, of which unfortunately only nine have survived. These are, without exception, important contributions to German opera history; recent performances have all proved their viability and power, but above all the originality, the music-dramatic sense and the always attractive melody of Telemann revealed.
On August 30, 1724, the premiere of the "joke-like singing game" The Newfangled Lover Damon or The Satyrs in Arcadia "took place on the Hamburg stage: Telemann's most brilliant comic opera. The libretto, which the convinced Republican Telemann probably wrote himself, is in his socio-critical arrangement (Damon as forerunner of Count Almaviva!) Quite forward-looking and musically Telemann strives to new shores: Barely da capo arias, everything goes to a real "action" in the sense of a "buffa". A baroque musical with an Enlightenment tendency, filled with humor, irony, sensuality and a series of musical ideas.
