This the work was first given in Vienna during Holy Week, 1729, the first of many collaborations between Caldara and Metastasio. Mention of the great librettist provides a prompt that my original review failed to stress the outstanding qualities of the text. Divided into two halves, the first part of the oratorio relates the story of the crucifixion as witnessed through the eyes of Mary Magdalene, John, and Joseph of Arimathea, who respond to the eager questioning of the remorseful Peter. The second part consists of philosophical commentary on the meaning of the crucifixion. Particularly in Part I, Metastasio draws on vivid imagery to convey the full horror of the event. Here, for example, is John describing the nailing to the cross: "… and some hardened, loutish men, sweating as they worked, bathed his face with their foul perspiration."
The cuts in the Virgin recording are largely made in the long stretches of secco recitative in Part II, and some may even be thought desirable in view of the diffuse nature of that part of the oratorio. But there are two critical musical cuts opened up here that alone would incline me to the new recording. One is in the first of the few choruses, where the central section for soloists and the repeat are omitted by Biondi. The other strikes me as astounding, for it occurs in the remarkable Part II aria for John, "Dovunque in guardo giro" (Whenever I turn my eyes). A meditation on the universality of God, it includes an extraordinary obbligato part for trombone, the only number in the work to call for more than strings alone. Such excisions can only be explained by the commercial consideration of keeping the work within the limits of a single disc. Virgin's cuts total some eight or nine minutes, the remaining differential in timing (101:52 against 79:31) being accounted for by Németh's tempos, invariably slower (at times substantially so) than those of Biondi. Just occasionally I feel that the Hungarian has gone too far in the other direction, but in general his more measured approach and attention to lyrical line suit the mood of the oratorio far better than his rival's excitable, nervous energy.
Németh's lineup of soloists is also preferable to Biondi's, of whom only Francesca Pedaci's John, rich in voice and characterization, could be accounted wholly satisfactory. As it happens Hungaroton also have an outstanding John, the role transposed to tenor. Indeed, so sensitive and mellifluous is Bentch that the fact that his is the "wrong" voice becomes irrelevant. This is a very fine singer of whom one hopes to hear much more. Zádori is, of course, no stranger, here singing a far more affecting and convincing Mary than Patricia Petibon's for Biondi. The beautifully placed and committed singing of Kovács is also a distinct improvement over the rather dull Sergio Foresti. The only real reservation concerns the sometimes rather wayward singing of Fotiadis in the part of Peter, yet he is so dramatically involved, so effective in conveying Peter's tearful remorse, that I would still account his performance preferable to Polverelli's inappropriate, overripe contralto.
Németh's sensitive performance reveals La passione in a new light, the sheer beauty of much of Caldara's score exposed in more telling fashion than Biondi's fast tempos and overaccentuated rhythms allowed. The orchestral playing may not sound perfectly finished, but neither did it on the earlier disc, while Hungaroton's sound is more spacious than the closely miked Virgin. Both recordings include excellent notes, those for the new set being by Pritchard. On the basis of the Biondi recording I concluded that La passione failed to achieve quite the stature of Maddalena. I still don't think it does, but Németh provides convincing evidence that the gap is far narrower than I'd previously believed.
