This band was a true icon of the “Woodstock Era”. “Pig Iron” evolved from a band known as “The Oz n’ Ends” that included keyboard player / vocalist Adam Ippolito aka “Ozzie” and drummer/lead vocalist Alan Abrahams. At that time the group had a lead guitarist known as “Fast Eddie”. I remember he had a blonde Afro and played the guitar with ridiculous fluency and ease. During the summer months of 1967 and 1968 this extremely talented group performed nightly at a club called “The Station”, an historic railroad station turned night club on the southern shore of Lake George in New York. It was owned (and still is) by the Lake George Steamboat Company. The band routinely belted out tunes like “Love Me Two Times” by the “Doors” (lead vocal by Adam Ippolito), “Lady Madonna” by The Beatles, “Good Day Sunshine” also by “The Beatles”, “Hey Joe” by Jimi Hendrix and “Respect” by “Aretha Franklin” (lead vocal by Alan Abrahams, the only male I know who could accomplish such a feat).
In 1969 the group reappeared as “Pig Iron”, performing once again at “The Station” in Lake George which featured a weekend performance by “The Spencer Davis Group” that same summer in an event dubbed “Greaser Day”. Pig Iron would also perform on alternating weekends in Cape Cod and other venues. “The Station” itself has a long railroad history and was probably the inspiration for the “Pig Iron” album cover. The new band featured a guitarist named Bill Peters who was years ahead of his time. The Pig Iron album is good but there is really no comparison to seeing this band perform live. They did stuff like “One More Heartache” by the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, “Rocky Raccoon”, by The Beatles, “More and More “ by Blood, Sweat, and Tears,”To Love Somebody” by The BeeGees, “Soul Drippin’” by Jimmy Rogers and the Mauds, and a version of “Blues Deluxe” once performed by Rod Stewart. Back then Alan Abrahams had no equals in the vocal department and he could really sing that stuff… never straining to hit those high notes and always on key. Likewise for Bill Peters on guitar. His screaming guitar phrases on his Les Paul Standard were what you might call “ear candy”. “0zzie” was a showman in both bands, good vocalist and great on keyboards. This band had a lot of talent, and could surely outperform even by today’s standards. I don’t remember much about the bass player, probably because I didn’t play the instrument. I was just a 16 year old aspiring guitar player and I would stand outside The Station each night on my way home from work as a parking attendant at Fort William Henry to listen to that band play a set or two . I bought the album when it first came out, but it wasn’t the same as being there…even standing outside. Very fond memories…
