Putting Concrete Blonde on the shelf, lead singer Johnette Napolitano with guitarist Marc Moreland (ex-Wall of Voodoo), and drummer Danny Montgomery form the trio Pretty & Twisted. Produced by Napolitano, the band's self-titled release is a more polished affair than much of her work with Concrete Blonde, but the familiar lyrical touchstones are all there. Although Moreland isn't as inventive a guitarist as James Mankey, Pretty & Twisted stands up with the best work of Concrete Blonde on cuts like the regret-tinged "Souvenir," the driving, swagger of "!Ride!," and the gorgeous ballad "Watching the Water." There's also a nifty, chugging cover of Music's "Mother of Pearl." The union appears to be a temporary affair, however, which is unfortunate because Pretty & Twisted is a wonderful slice of adult alternative rock that is both melodic and intelligent.
