Hard Psych Blues Rock
These New Haven rockers were already local garage heroes when they changed their name from the Shags to Pulse in 1968. Their sole album, a superb hard rock collection featuring searing guitar solos, appeared on the tiny Poison Ring label the following year, but failed to catch on, despite being released in Europe as well. It’s presented here complete with explanatory liner notes and both sides of their ultra-rare pre-LP 45, making it a must-have for all lovers of acid rock.
The roots of Pulse lay in two New Haven garage bands, the Shags and the Bram Rigg Set. Influenced by the Beatles and surf music, the Shags released a couple of singles locally before encountering a dentist named Thomas ‘Doc’ Cavalier, who was looking to get involved with the burgeoning pop scene. He also signed up the Bram Rigg Set, and by 1965 the Shags were supporting hitmakers like the Byrds, the Animals and Paul Revere & the Raiders, while both bands appeared in a 1966 TV pilot entitled ‘A Show With A Very Long Title’. The Bram Rigg Set’s sole 45, I Can Only Give You Everything, had appeared on the Kayden label early in 1967, by which time the Shags had notched up six 45s, but both bands’ records were damned by poor distribution, and by the end of the year both had split up. Cavalier encouraged members of the two groups to collaborate on further recordings, and though nothing was released, a new entity emerged from the sessions: Pulse.
Originally called ‘The Pulse Of Burritt Bradley’, after a name on a gravestone in the local cemetery (also the source of the Bram Rigg Set’s moniker), early in 1968 they issued a very eccentric 45 (Can Can Girl / Burritt Bradley, Atco 6530), which didn’t sell and is included here as a bonus track. Undeterred, they jammed extensively before recording an LP full of heavy, Cream-influenced songs that reflected the turbulent events of 1968. Taped at Cavalier’s own newly-named Trod Nossel studios (meaning ‘tree of many branches’ in Norwegian, apparently), the LP presaged work by hard rock titans like Led Zeppelin and Humble Pie, but by the time it was released (on Cavalier’s tiny Poison Ring label, trailed by a 45 pairing My Old Boy with Another Woman), the band was already coming apart. Though the album also appeared in the UK (on Major Minor), it didn’t sell there either, becoming yet another of the classy one-shots that so characterised the era’s rock underground.–––––
The Pulse Of Burritt Bradley (из The Shags: Carl Donnell - vocals, guitar; Tommy Roberts – vocals, guitar; Lance Gardiner – bass, из Bram Rigg Set: Bennet Segal – drums; Peter Neri – guitar; Rich Bednarcyk - keyboards).
