Das Urteil der Musikgeschichte über den Komponisten Antonio Salieri schien eindeutig und wurde deshalb bis in die jüngste Zeit kaum überprüft: Ein solider Handwerker mit geringer Inspiration, der dem genialen jüngeren Mozart seinen Erfolg neidete, ihm gar nach dem Leben trachtete. Interessanterweise führte gerade der „Amadeus”-Film von Milos Forman, der an der alten Legende weiterstrickte, zu einer wenn auch bescheidenen Salieri-Renaissance, die in dem Salieri-Album Cecilia Bartolis, einer glanzvollen Rehabilitation des verkannten Meisters, ihren Höhepunkt fand.
Als Salieri in Wien Carlo Goldonis Komödie „La locandiera” vertonte (auf deutschen Bühnen unter dem Titel „Mirandolina” populär), war er erst 23 Jahre alt und hatte seinen Stil noch nicht gefunden. Das Textbuch des Tenors Domenico Poggi, der die feine Charakterkomödie in die gängigen Buffa-Schablonen presst, gab ihm auch kaum Gelegenheit, große Talente zu entwickeln. Die Figuren, vor allem die drei komisch akzentuierten Freier, haben nur wenig charakteristische Farben. Das Stück, das nach lebendigen Ensembles geradezu schreit, hangelt sich in der Opernversion zwischen ellenlangen Secco-Rezitativen von Arie zu Arie. Da war Meister Goldoni in seinen Libretti, die er vor allem für Baldassare Galuppi schrieb, schon wesentlich weiter. Er erfand die Ketten-Finali, die da Ponte und Mozart vorwegnahmen. Salieris Musik ist nicht ohne Charme und besticht auch gelegentlich durch melodische Einfälle, aber sie wirkt durchweg austauschbar.
Der Mitschnitt einer Aufführung aus Lugo von 1989 (es soll die erste nach fast 200 Jahren gewesen sein) hat vor allem dokumentarischen Wert. Fabio Luisi, der damals noch nicht in der ersten Liga spielte, versucht das sich mutig nach dem Präzisionsfanatiker Arturo Toscanini benennende Orchester mit wechselndem Erfolg auf den richtigen Settecento-Ton einzuschwören. Von den Sängern hinterlässt Alessandra Ruffini als Mirandolina den stärksten Eindruck, der Rest ist mehr oder weniger guter Durchschnitt. Das Booklet enthält den informativen Werkkommentar auch in deutscher Sprache, das Libretto allerdings nur auf italienisch.
