This recording, made in 1991, contains two fine performances. Indeed the performance of Hamlet is better than fine, it is positively thrilling. The Polish orchestra are well able to deliver on this and Leaper shows considerable empathy for the music. The recording is good, if a little lacking in absolute clarity at the bottom end which tends to be just a touch inclined to 'muddiness' at moments of greatest demand. This should not be over-emphasised in view of the excellence of the music making and the general acceptance of the recording. Indeed, the weighty sound-stage and quite close balance suits the heavier approach of Leaper when compared to Karajan on DGG for example, and to a lesser extent, Jansons on Chandos.

The symphony is a more interesting composition than the following two, the Little Russian and the Polish, with plenty of Russian input thematically, interesting interplay of ideas and successful orchestration. All four movements are readily identifiable as being essentially in Tchaikovsky's melodic and orchestral sound world. This will appeal to anyone who warms to Tchaikovsky's ballet scores for instance.

Hamlet, however, is a fully mature composition and stands on equal footing with Francesca da Rimini for example. Like that and the Romeo overture it follows a similar pattern of construction with lots of fire in the outer sections and with an extended 'love' theme in the central part. At about 18 minutes it is also rather more compressed as subject matter and, as a result, the drama packs more punch potentially, given a good or better performance such as we are given here.

Stokowski's performance from the late 1950's has been considerably improved in its re-mastering and is the regular reference point for both Hamlet and Francesca. It deserves such an exalted position. However, this particular performance runs it very close and, despite my comments about occasional slight 'muddiness' in the lower reaches of sound, this newer disc clearly has an sonic advantage.

I would suggest that this disc deserves to be seriously considered by purchasers interested in either or both works as single versions. It is also well worth considering for collectors even if they already own Stokowski's overtures or the symphony directed by Karajan or Jansons, both leading contenders.
