What makes Live at the Roundhouse London, the Dresden Dolls' second foray into the world of live DVDs really stand out is the story behind it. In 2006, the owners of legendary London venue Roundhouse approached the duo of Amanda Palmer and Brian Viglione to be the first rock act to perform in the venue after a two-year period of restoration. The Dolls responded by assembling a full-blown two-day festival, to which they invited a distinctly rag-tag bunch of musicians, singers, dancers, artists, performers, and plain weirdos. Burlesque performers, improvised dance troops, beat-boxers, percussionists playing found objects, legendary musical mavericks (among the participants of the proceeding were the likes of Edward Ka-Spel, Lene Lovich and Baby Dee), even a puppet-show made of Barbie dolls performing Motörhead songs – everybody showed up to make this two-day event something really special. The DVD captures all this beautiful craziness vividly enough to make one really regret having missed this. The Dresden Dolls' live set proves them more than an adequate headliner for an event of such colorful magnitude. They hold the attention of the 3000-strong sold-out crowd with ease, often gracefully offering the spotlight to whoever chooses to assist them. For "Gravity" and "Mandy Goes to Med School," they are joined by a duo of burlesque dancers and an acrobat, "Slide" is performed with the help of dance troop Zen Zen Zo, dancing in the middle of the audience. A number of volunteer singers from the audience come on-stage to do the backing vocals for "The Jeep Song," and later, on "Sing," the whole bunch of collaborators comes up to celebrate the power of singing. The Dresden Dolls also again demonstrate their ability to handpick covers that suit them and offer unique possibilities for new readings of them. Their takes on Neutral Milk Hotel's "Two-Headed Boy" and Liza Minnelli's "Mein Herr" from Cabaret are the highlights of the show, as well as an unexpectedly explosive version of Tears for Fears' hit "Mad World," for which they are joined by Australian punk-band the Red Paintings. It all adds up to a spectacular one-of-a-kind show that's not easy to forget. A must-have for fans and a treat for any person with even the slightest interest in the ways of the Dresden Dolls or of arts and performances in general.
