One has become one of U2's most recognizable songs to the public. A hit around the world, the song became one of the songs regularily played on radio in the days following the 9/11 attacks in the US. One is the song that U2 found when they were having difficulty in Berlin moving forward on the recording of the new album. There was talk of whether the band wanted to continue, and after writing and recording this song there was no doubt left that they would.
One has been played at each concert since the Zoo TV tour which followed the release of Achtung Baby. Bono and the Edge performed One live with Brian Eno at the Warchild concert in 1995. That recording appears on the Miss Sarajevo single as well as Pavarotti's For the Children of Bosnia CD. In 1992 for MTV's Presidential Inaugeration, Larry and Adam performed One with Mike Mills and Michael Stipe from REM. They called this short lived group, Automatic Baby, and the live performance was released on the Amazing Grace compilation, as well as several harder to find compilations. A live version of One recorded by the entire band in 1997 at the Tibetan Freedom Concert was released on the concert album of that event. Finally the 1997 performance in Mexico was captured and released on the Hasta La Vista Baby fan club only release.
