Recorded in 2004 for the new label Attacca.
Louis Andriessen (1939) is considered the most influential Dutch composer of his generation.
Andriessen always admired Stravinsky, but his music also has strong bonds with
the minimal music of Terry Riley and Steve Reich. He has composed for stage and
movies ('Rosa' with Peter Greenaway, and 'Writing to Vermeer'). His style is very versatile;
there are citations, written-out improvisations, and in fact all the phases of modern history
of music are to be found here, but always with the authority of a strong personal voice.
Ralph van Raat is a young pianist who admires Andriessen's approach of the piano.
''Virtually each note carries with it an exact indication of dynamics, articulation, color and
musical intention,'' he wrote regarding the piece 'Étude pour les timbres'.
His recording of the complete piano works of Louis Andriessen with the Attacca label was
selected as one of the top 10 CDs of 2005 by the Dutch paper Trouw.
