Anthony Burr and Charles Curtis present this collection of curated compositions from Alvin Lucier and Morton Feldman. Two Lucier pieces, August Moon and Trio For Clarinet, Cello & Tuba are presented here for the first time. Liner notes are excerpted from a lecture on Morton Feldman given by Alvin Lucier.Tracklist:
“For Feldman, dynamics serve an acoustical function. When he mitigates a piano attack he reduces that spike of noise that’s at the onset of every piano sound leaving only the sinusoidal pure after-sound. It’s as if he invented electronic music with the piano.” Alvin Lucier from liner notes.
“Lucier manages to hear a layer of acoustical physics in Feldman’s music that perhaps no one else would hear. He’s hearing something in Feldman that is actually coming from his own musical world; in a way, hearing his own music in Feldman’s, and drawing inspiration from that.”
When I was director of the Brandeis University Chamber Chorus I asked Morty to make a piece for my chorus. He asked me, "What are the ranges of the singers in your chorus, Alvin?" I answered, "Well, I've got some sopranos that can hit very high notes." He replied "No, no. I don't want to know the highest notes the sopranos can sing. What is a comfortable range for all of them?" I said, "Well, for sopranos in a college chorus a G one space above the staff is very comfortable." "What about your basses?" I said, "Well, we've got a couple who…" "No," he interrupted. "I want to know what is a comfortable range for basses in a college chorus." I said, "Well, low F's or G's are well within the range of young bass voices." So the piece he wrote ‒ Chorus and Instruments 2 ‒ was within the range of average college-age singers. The resulting sound was beautiful. There was no straining, only the natural sound of young voices.
I was in Vienna in November and heard several concerts of Feldman's music. One consisted of several of his early smaller pieces, including one he composed for the Hans Namuth film about Jackson Pollock. They also played a piece called Two Instruments for French horn and cello. It was about eight minutes long and consisted of two lines notated in sync but with instructions for each player to move from note to note at his or her own speed causing the dyads to gradually split apart. The result was not counterpoint as we know it ‒ Feldman hated polyphony ‒ but simply two voices drifting away from each other in a natural manner.
That performance was a nostalgic and pungent experience for me.
