In our quest to make RevelationZ Magazine the most comprehensive online resource for Hard Rock and Heavy Metal we need to feature Norway's own Backstreet Girls.
In 1989 Backstreet Girls' most popular album "Party on Elm Street" was released. Backstreet Girls was often characterized as Sleaze rock. Maybe the name Backstreet Girls misleads because this is not Glam or Sleaze. Backstreet Girls is a no frills, no compromise straight to the bone Rock N' Roll band.
The history of Backstreet Girls is characterized by many label changes and change in singers. They formed in 1984 and have released 11 albums. Original lead singer Bjorn Muller rejoined the band for the "Hellway To High" album released in September 1999. The album is packed with boogie and high octane Rock N' Roll. The guitar sound is fat and the band plays with a raw energy that makes Backstreet Girls a crossover of simple boogie rock combined with garage and Punk.
The album contains a handful of explosive tracks. However, this kind of music is much better suited in a small rock club, where the listener really can feel the energy. The irresistible Boogie Rocker Four Roses lives up to its title and One More for the Road makes you wanna drink a bottle of Four Roses or at least getting drunk in beer. The instrumental Speedway to Heaven is ideal for a Quentin Tarantino movie.
The production really fuels these gasoline rockers, but a few songs falls out of place like the primitive titled track Panic in Pussyland.
After reestablishing Backstreet Girls with "Hellway to High" the band went on tour with Rose Tattoo. Namely Rose Tattoo is probably the band that is most alike Backstreet Girls. The band recorded some live shows off that tour on an 8 track, which was released as "Black Boogie Death Rock 'N' Roll" along with six new studio tracks.
The live tracks display the band in the right surroundings. There are no overdubs but instead the recording is a pure energetic Rock N' Roll show. The studio tracks doesn't reach same standard as "Hellway to High".
Backstreet Girls is still going strong and have a new release in the can: The previous unreleased album "Don't Fake It Too Long" from 1995 sees an album release for the first time. Backstreet Girls remains active touring in Norway and they were on the bill for the prestigious Norway Rock festival summer 2008.
Who said Norway and Boogie rock wasn't the right combination? If you want to know where Glucifier and Turbonegro come from I am positive that Backstreet Girls has inspired their native colleagues. [revelationz.net]
