These works (from 1967 to 1994) not only bring out multiple links, both in compositional conception as well as in content, but they also bear witness to the continuity, the coherence and the deepening of an approach which is both strong and original. Ferneyhough's work are extremely dense and virtuoso, composed right through with a meticulousness and a rigor which seek to canalize a powerfully eruptive material.
Ferneyhough has, in the course of his works, developed a sort of musical perspectivism which was already present, in latent fashion, in "Prometheus" (1967), and which finds its peak in the "Carceri d'invenzione" cycle: materials, strategies and different references are interlaced in a complex manner, simultaneously as well as successively. They result in a prismatic form which is rich in interrelations, in which supra-musical elements –the figures of Prometheus and Icarus, the paintings of Breughel and Piranesi, or stellar constellations– do not simply determine structural ideas or dramatic situations but are, somehow, allegories of the composition itself. They become palpable in the very quality of the sounds.
