James Ehnes, violin, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Kirill Karabits, conductor

James Ehnes, the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and its charismatic music director Kirill Karabits went directly to the studio to record these two great 20th-century concertos after performing them in concerts the Observer described as ‘extraordinary’. Of the Shostakovich, the paper went on to say ‘the brilliant James Ehnes … apparently encountering no technical problems in this hazardously difficult work, transmitted its mood of bitter melancholy and dry-eyed grief with alert, responsive support from the orchestra’.

Both works have a marked seriousness and expressive weight about them. Virtuosity is not exploited in any facile, ingratiating way but rather to intensify the substance of the music. Ehnes has full measure of it and of its eloquent application. Strangely enough – since Shostakovich was probably unaware of Britten’s concerto when he started his own in 1947 – both of them feature a powerful movement cast in the form of a passacaglia, with a reiterated bass pattern triggering a sequence of variations above it. Shostakovich’s third-movement Andante in the First Concerto is a particularly famous example, but the superb, mainly slow finale of Britten’s Concerto can genuinely be uttered in the same breath. In both of them, the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra adds compelling force and colour, Ehnes’s range and inflections of tone and his mature spectrum of interpretation gauged with exceptional insight. The partnership between Ehnes, Karabits and the BSO comes across as a true meeting of minds, and these outstanding performances cannot be recommended highly enough.
