A self-proclaimed Brutal Jazz Orchestra is a fitting tag for this zany, yet talented group of musical pioneers. Chawata is playing instrumental music that places itself in a gap somewhere between jazz/rock, big band, and perhaps because of the bands inane sense for composition, Zappa inspired music. All things combined make for a fully digestable musical product in the end.

No single performer stands out with this group, the compostions are based around each and every member of what sounds like an orchestra. Aside from the atypical instruments of bass, drums, guitars, etc. They also employ a full horn section, and make full use of these players by creating complex and off the wall sounding charts, I guess that's where a Zappa reference can be of some use in describing the bands sound. Of course they are really their very own thing. Granted they do have certain nuances that will remind some of Zappa, but you will also hear some other variables that are unique to Chawata.

If one word could describe the bands' style it would be FUN. While taking a playful approach to writing complex music, the end results are the kind of music most progressive rock, or even fusion fans are certain to appreciate. The fact that they are an instrumental band should not dissuade the readers interest in aquiring such a collection of odd, non-sensical musical comedy. This cd really runs a full gamut of genre crossing, and keeps amazingly coherent through the episodes of challenging pieces. While the music retains an oddity about it, it never gets weird, or noisy, no clanging, banging, or travels into the darker side of questionable avant sounds are present, but it is most assuredly strange enough to appeal to those fans as well.

All in all, Chawata has presented a nice musical statement with this cd, something that while being different, is also very appealing to the ears and mind. ~ Reviewed by MJBrady on 17 Jun 2004
