The Creation were an English rock band, formed in 1966. Here is the first and second ("Making Time" and "Biff Bang Pow") volumes set collecting all known recordings by the '60s mod / pop band. 40 tracks, including all the hits and previously unreleased cuts. 1998's Retroactive Records release.
The Creation were charged mid-'60s mod rockers whose catchy, well-constructed songs echoed the most aggressive work of the Beatles, Small Faces, the Kinks, and the Who. The group recorded a handful of blistering songs that rate among rock's most visceral, melodic, blistering three-minute nirvanas. These ahead-of-the-curve numbers were dramatically enhanced by Eddie Philips's delicately controlled feedback-drenched guitar work (heightened by the use of a violin bow sawed across the guitar strings with incredible malice). "Making Time," this collection's opener, is such a revved-up, anthemic number that fans of garage grace will not mind at all that three different versions of it are included. Other highlights include the loud, druggy "How Does It Feel to Feel" (based on a line from Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone") and a surprisingly poignant cover of Otis Redding's "That's How Strong My Love Is." Along with its companion volume (Biff Bang Pow!), this collects everything available by the Creation: all of their officially released tracks, rare mono and stereo mixes, and a smattering of live German TV show appearances. General fans should continue to stick with Edsel's How Does It Feel to Feel, a well-chosen anthology of their best 20 tracks. However, a cult band such as the Creation tends to attract fans who do want everything, and this two-volume series is exemplary in that regard, although much of the rare material is slightly different stereo mixes, rather than entirely new versions. The most interesting rarities on this disc are the live TV broadcasts from 1966 (including covers of "I'm a Man" and "That's How Strong My Love Is," which they never recorded in the studio), and an entirely unreleased instrumental. It also has several of their most renowned official tracks ("Making Time," "Try and Stop Me," "How Does It Feel to Feel," "Nightmares"), and the package is made more enticing with extensive liner notes by Mike Stax.

The second in Retroactive's collection of the recorded works of loud, arty, feedback-loving mods the Creation will thrill fans of tightly compressed '60s rock (but you should begin with volume 1, since it's slightly better). Skip ahead to track 3, the psychedelic-flavored, strings-enhanced, snottily sung "Life Is Just Beginning"–the rhythm section is sloppy and plodding, but the song is totally great, arching toward a chaos few groups from the time could even dream of. A heretofore obscure act birthed in 1966 and produced by Shel Talmy (who worked with the Stones, the Kinks, and the Who), the group never got along with each other. Myriad lineup changes and bad luck ensured that the Creation never achieved widespread recognition, and they broke up in 1968. In the early '80s, their cause was championed by British indie pop acts, notably the Television Personalities (who covered their classic pop-art tribute "Painter Man") and Biff Bang Pow. The latter act not only named itself after a particularly explosive song by the band, but its leader, Alan McGee, called his influential record label (Oasis, Jesus & Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine) Creation. Together with its companion volume Making Time, this 20-track disc collects everything by the Creation. It's just as worthy as the first installment, featuring several of their most well-known tunes ("Painter Man," "Biff Bang Pow," "Life Is Just Beginning," "Through My Eyes") and a bunch more alternate stereo mixes. Tracks such as "Sweet Helen," "Like a Rolling Stone," and the instrumental "Sylvette" have been hard to find over the years, although they don't rate among their better efforts. There are also a couple of German TV show performances circa 1967 of "Painter Man" and "Try and Stop Me." By the way, the two Complete Collection discs don't have the rare mid-'60s singles by the Mark Four (who evolved into the Creation), some of which were quite good; for those you'll need to look for Eva's The Mark Four/The Creation.
