Original Album Series is a stellar 5-CD budget box set released by Rhino Records in 2016, chronicling the complete golden-era studio and live discography of American psychedelic rock pioneers Iron Butterfly between 1968 and 1970. Housed in miniature replica cardboard sleeves, the collection traces the band's rapid stylistic journey from the fuzzed-out R&B grooves of their debut "Heavy", through the earth-shattering success of "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" with its historic 17-minute title epic, and onto the sophisticated melodic structures of "Ball". Rounding out the set is the raw power of their 1970 "Live" album and their underrated final statement "Metamorphosis", which saw the group ditching the psych trimmings for twin-guitar-driven hard rock. Defined by swirling Hammond organs, heavily distorted riffs, and dark, doom-laden atmospheres, this comprehensive box set serves as an essential historical archive for fans of early American progressive rock and proto-heavy metal.
