Genre: Jazz, Post-Bop, Fusion | RAR 3% Rec. | Label: Universal Music (UCCJ-9156)

A tremendous little album from pianist Don Friedman - a trio session, but one that's cut with a mixture of Fender Rhodes and electric bass, which gives the album a majestically soulful groove. Friedman's never sounded better, and the record is easily one of his best - with a sound that matches the best CTI sides of the time, colored by the freedoms of the Japanese recording scene of the 70s - territory that Don never hit this strongly again, and which makes the record a really unique outing, quite diferent than both his early work and later sides. The group features Lyn Christie on bass and Bill Goodwin on drums.

    Label: Chiaroscuro | FLAC (tracks + .cue, log) | 75:41 | 378 MB | 10 tracks
    Genre: Jazz, Hard Bop, Post-Bop

Released in 2004 on Chiaroscuro Records, Hot House is a superb post-bop session led by veteran jazz pianist Don Friedman. Recorded live in the studio, the album features a versatile lineup ranging from intimate solo piano performances to energetic quartet tracks featuring tenor saxophonist Tim Armacost, bassist Ron McClure, and drummer Tony Jefferson. Friedman's crisp touch and inventive harmonic concepts shine across a well-curated program of originals—such as "35 West 4th Street" and "Waltz for Marilyn"—alongside masterfully reinterpreted bebop classics and standards like Tadd Dameron's title track "Hot House," Wayne Shorter's "Anna Maria," Mal Waldron's "Soul Eyes," and Tom Harrell's "Sail Away." A refined showcase of modern mainstream jazz piano and hard-bop improvisation.

Genre: Avant-Garde Jazz, Post-Bop, European Free Improvisation, Modern Creative

On The Horizon Beyond, the legendary Hungarian-American guitar pioneer and visionary harmonic explorer Attila Zoller leads an absolute powerhouse transatlantic quartet to deliver a staggering, historic, and masterfully synchronized studio document. Originally recorded in March 1965 in Berlin for the EmArcy label and beautifully preserved on this pristine digital edition by Siegfried Loch’s premier German creative outpost ACT Music, this monumental milestone stands as a towering holy grail of early European avant-garde jazz development. Spanning over 39 minutes of immaculate high-fidelity spatial design, the 6-track landscape operates with an intense, lightning-fast, and beautifully complex kinetic energy. The quartet stands at the absolute vanguard of the mid-60s creative explosion, masterfully balancing advanced post-bop structures with completely uninhibited abstraction—firing off magnificent collective layouts like the hauntingly lyrical title track The Horizon Beyond, the exploding fragments of Blizzards, and a historic, hyper-fluid reading of Carla Bley's avant-garde standard Ictus. Driven by Zoller's biting, modal guitar geometry, Don Friedman's cascading block chords, Barre Phillips's elastic acoustic bass framework, and Daniel Humair's multi-directional percussion tapestry, this pristine archive remains an indispensable masterpiece for serious free jazz purists and creative guitar collectors worldwide.
