Using the postmodern torch music of Portishead as a foundation, Lamb spin out into new sonic territories on their eponymous debut album. The group sports a heavier techno influence, incorporating the buzzing rhythms of drum'n'bass into their music in particular, yet they cut their modernistic electronic influences with a dark sense of melodicism. Most of the album is devoted to jazzy songs that are broken apart by Andy Barlow's synthesizers and sampler and are anchored by Louise Rhodes' seductive vocals, which prevent the electronics from becoming cold. It's sophisticated urban music, one that's miles away from the avant-garde sensibilities of Tricky and the haunted romanticism of Portishead, or even the pop leanings of Sneaker Pimps and the soul-inflected grooves of Morcheeba…

Courtney Pine was initially a Coltrane sound-alike, but he began to bring soul jazz, reggae, and other musical genres to the mix with his 1992 album Closer to Home, which made use of his background touring with such reggae bands as Clint Eastwood & General Saint. Since then he has eagerly brought hip-hop elements into his work, performing live with a DJ in addition to his usual combo. His 1996 album, Modern Day Jazz Stories featured DJ Pongo on turntables as well as DJ Sparki on hardware/samples. Using an Apple Mac with Logic Audio software and Pro Tools, Pine generates loops as well as multiple flute and sax parts and combines them with studio techniques that include filtering and pitch-shifting, Pine was able to create the most convincing combination of mainstream jazz and electronica/DJ culture. This combination of jazz fusion and hip-hop has sometimes been dubbed “Trip Jazz.” The DJs function very much as part of the band, throwing ideas at the players and responding to their playing much the way a percussionist might do.

A handy compilation of Jimpster's various and hard-to-find twelves for the Freerange label, indeed ranging free, from mutant jazz jungle to swirly downtempo breaks. Some of the tracks veer dangerously close to quiet storm territory, but the arrangements are uniformly accomplished and the production top-notch. A number of the tracks feature bass and flute accompaniment by Cheyne Towers and Roger Wickham.

The sixth album to come from the alter ego of occasional illustrated man Dave Harrow takes a step away from his bluesy Straight from the Fridge. Indeed, a move to Los Angeles in the early months of 2003 resulted in a veritably sun-drenched full-length, which slides back to his pre-breakbeat roots in its collision of tribal beats, techno dancefloor grunt, and standup bass. The opening "Feel in Love" sets the agenda, a heat haze of strolling percussion and offbeat bass, the vocals of Harrow's latest muse E Luv's vocals rising from the disc like a fog. Techno shudders through the album, but is far from an overriding influence, with a swing-time sway driving through "Heart Beat" and the smell of Cohibas rising over "Doyoudo," with traces of Harrow's soundtrack work for the cinema evident in the closing ambience of "To Be Found."
