Released in 2006 on his independent BPM label, In A Mellow Tone finds legendary keyboardist, composer, and producer George Duke stepping back from his signature electric funk sound to deliver a rich, acoustic-driven jazz date. Stripping down to pristine grand piano and Fender Rhodes, Duke revisits a lifetime of influences through swinging standards, delicate ballads, and re-imagined original classics. Supported by a stellar rhythm section—featuring virtuosic drummer Terri Lyne Carrington and acoustic bass master Brian Bromberg—the session effortlessly shifts from Duke Ellington's title track and Gershwin's "I Loves You Porgy" to Sergio Mendes' "So Many Stars." The album also revisits Duke's hit ballad "Sweet Baby" in a relaxed acoustic setting, backed by fine horn solos from Everette Harp and Dennis Farias alongside percussion accents by Airto Moreira and Munyungo Jackson.
