Joseph Mayseder took part in a performance of Joseph Haydn’s oratorio “The Seven Last Words” in 1803 when he was only 14 years old. In later years, he played in numerous Viennese orchestras, including under the direction of Beethoven and Schubert, and was concertmaster of the Vienna Court Orchestra from 1830. He composed numerous violin works and chamber music at a young age, primarily for his own performance. Mayseder’s compositions were performed in thousands of concerts worldwide in the 19th century, including by artists such as Henri Vieuxtemps, Joseph Hellmesberger, Franz Liszt and Giovanni Bottesini; however, they are still considered an forgotten gems today. Vienna-based violinist Thomas Christian, who has already released recordings of the violin concerto and virtuoso works with string quartet by Joseph Mayseder, presents a cross-section of Mayseder’s works for violin and piano on this double CD with the versatile pianist Sina Kloke. The works, all world premiere recordings, range from variations on opera arias to polonaises and fantasies to duos for violin and piano. The combination of virtuosity and unmistakable Viennese charm plays a central role in the interpretation of Mayseder’s oeuvre.

The pianist Andreas Eggertsberger, who studied in Austria and the USA with Karl Heinz Kämmerling and Oleg Maisenberg, among others, deals with the late works of three composers on his new album “Spätlese” (Late Harvest): Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Johannes Brahms and Frédéric Chopin. Whether a work is considered a late work has less to do with the composer’s age and more to do with where the breaking points and further developments are in a composer’s oeuvre. Some of the three selected masters were still young when they entered their late phase: Mozart was in his late twenties when he composed his Fantasia K. 475 and Sonata in C minor K. 457, Chopin was thirty-four when he composed his third and final Sonata in B minor, and Brahms was fifty-nine when he composed his Three Intermezzi Op. 117. Many a future is anticipated. Mozart, for example, builds a bridge to Beethoven with his Fantasy and Sonata in C minor. Chopin, on the other hand, takes a look at late Romanticism and beyond with his increasingly bold harmonies, and Brahms foreshadows musical developments that would only become influential in the 20th century.

Also included on this recording is the Sonata for Violin solo, Op. 115. Irnberger dedicates this recording to Igor Oistrakh, who was born in Ukraine and died in 2021, from whom he received important impulses for his own playing, and whose father David Oistrakh was one of the most important Prokofiev interpreters and friends of the composer.

The repertoire of KLANGKOLLEKTIV WIEN with their conductor Rémy Ballot is focused on famous as well as lesser known works of the Viennese classical period. This live recording presents the two late string quartets No. 14 in C-sharp minor, Op. 131, and No. 16 in F major, Op. 135, by Ludwig van Beethoven in a version for string orchestra. The working title of this concerto, "Music from the Inner Silence," refers to the fact that at the time of the composition of these works, Beethoven had probably already completely lost his sense of hearing - he seems to be turning more and more toward an inner, spiritual world. Thus, these two great quartets encompass in their musical substance all possible affective states of the complexity of the soul and existence, were considered avant-garde not only at the time, and in many ways herald the boldness of the Viennese School and the innovations of Béla Bartók's quartets. This effect is significantly enhanced by the expansion of the orchestra from four to 16 musicians.

Rather, they comprise a lyrical or dramatic, sad and occasionally even humorous monologue. Leave-taking from this world without a hint of wrath: in fact, almost heaven ».

For this complete recording of Johannes Brahms' piano trios, the internationally successful Salzburg violinist Thomas Albertus Irnberger chose his usual top-class ensemble partners. Irnberger has long had an intense artistic friendship with the versatile cellist David Geringas, who, like the Russian-born pianist Lilya Zilberstein, can point to a number of recordings that are as long as they are impressive. The Piano Trio No. 1 in B major, Op. 8 can be heard here in the revised version, which closes the time gap of almost 25 years to the other two trios (No. 2 in C major, Op. 87 and No. 3 in C minor, Op. 101), since the revision took place after the completion of these works and thus at the peak of Brahmsian compositional art.
For the Trio for Clarinet, Violoncello and Piano in A minor, Op. 114, Brahms envisaged the viola as an alternative instrumentation from the very beginning, which is mastered by Irnberger as brilliantly as the violin.

It was in 2013 at the latest that Alejandro del Valle-Lattanzio became known to a public with an interest in music by winning the Ö1 Talentebörse composition prize, which is organised by ORF (Austrian state radio). The jury statement says: "The jury appreciates the emphatically independent, if not to say idiosyncratic musical language. Fantastical invention and unusual sound colours shape his pieces. In his creative use of unusual producers of sound and the occasional use of video material his twin talents as a student of both composition and visual art are evident".

This two-album set contains four different kinds of iterations of the Viennese spirit: Duets, Lieder, dialect literature, and Schrammelmusik, all of which stem from the vineyard that is Vienna and all of which, for all their variety and different flavor, stand for what makes Vienna, musically speaking. It’s a fortuitous confluence of circumstances when a celebrated operatic bass like Günther Groissböck and a likewise popular tenor like Karl-Michael Ebner develop a friendship and discover their mutual love for Wienerlied, Vienna’s unique musical and socio-cultural phenomenon. Even more so, if this leads to an album production like the one at hand, which additionally features spoken interludes – witty but also pointed, biting, and sarcastic Viennese poems by Trude Marzik, Josef Weinheber and H. C. Artmann, read with great charm by Christoph Wagner-Trenkwitz – as well as captivating instrumentals by the Philharmonia-Schrammeln.

Has any violinist captured the imaginations of ensuing generations to the degree Romanian-American Jascha Heifetz has? Arguably not. So no wonder that there's always a steady trickle of recital releases centred around Heifetz's virtuosic transcriptions of popular tunes, which he used as recital encores (although, fascinatingly, these tend to pop less regularly as actual live recital encores). Still, when most often it's younger generation violinists who are recording this razzle-dazzle repertoire, this programme from Benjamin Schmidt and his pianist wife Ariane Haering – in honour of the 120th anniversary of Heifetz's birth – stands out for being the work of a violinist now in the fourth decade of his performance career. You can hear all the confidence and technical assurance of years, too, right from his first crisply biting notes and firm portamentos in the programme-opening Prokofiev March from The Love for Three Oranges – a piece which overall he delivers big, bold and broad-toned, with a fabulous sweep to its upwards-racing runs. Likewise the rapid pizzicato strumming of the following Banjo and Fiddle by William Kroll.

Viennese dance music and Wienerlied was referred to as Schrammelmusik ever since the work of the brothers Johann and Josef Schrammel and enjoyed great popularity at the Heurigenlokal (Viennese wine taverns) as well as in the palaces and saloons of Viennese aristocracy. The debut recording of the young Austrian women's ensemble Divinerinnen presents varied sonic impressions of traditional dance sketches interwoven with additional musical characteristics of Viennese entertainment culture. With a focus on variety in their instrumentation, the ensemble's repertoire ranges from hidden treasures from the archive to the rarely played, all the way to compositions by contemporaries. The sound worlds produced by the instrumental cast with violins, contraguitar, clarinet, Viennese button accordion, viola and cello gives expression to the group's intention to break established norms and listening habits.

The 6 Piano Trios of W. A. Mozart, which were composed in the years 1776, 1786 and 1788, already show the increasing emanci-pation of the string instruments – while in the first work (1776) the keyboard instrument still predominates, and the two strings take on a more accompanying role, even though in some cases a distinctive one, the relationship between the instruments developed in the five works of the 1780s lead to an approximate equality. The peculiarity of this new recording is that for the first time the auto-graphs, some of which have only recently become available, have been taken into account, which has brought about some chan-ges compared to the previously printed sheet music editions, especially in the area of phrasing and articulation, and thus, the Vienna Mozart-Trio presents an authentic complete recording for the first time.

"The young, Venezuelan pianist Walkiria Izaguirre who received her musical training in Vienna presents her debut CD with a pure Beethoven program, which features an early, a middle and a late piano sonata and thereby gives an overview of the master’s oeuv-re. In her own words, this album is a tribute to one of the most important figures in the history of music, whose musical creativity would reach an unexpected and wonderful development towards freedom and individual expression for eternity. The sonata in F major Op. 10/2 was called one of Beethoven’s most joyful works by Paul Badura-Skoda, the sonata in D major Op. 28 described by him as gentle, idyllic and light-filled to the brim, perhaps a response to the gloomier previous “Moonlight” sonata, a rejection of depression, a move towards friendlier climes, and is also called the “Pastoral” sonata. Finally, the sonata Op. 109 is kept in the ‘mystical’ key of E major, expressing exhilaration, rapture, earthly, and heavenly love. The variation movement’s theme is proof that, despite some contemporary critic’s judgement, Beethoven was indeed capable of writing beautiful melodies."
