A trawl through the wonderful career of the hugely underrated Harry Nilsson takes a chronological look at his back catalogue. Pretty much every classic you would ever need is here - Everybody's Talkin', Me and My Arrow, Without Her, Without You, One… the list goes on. Naturally there is a concentration on Harry's most successful work Nilsson Schmilsson with all but one track of the entire album included. There are some delightful hidden classics too with hard to find tracks included, but perhaps too little concentration on his later career. Nevertheless, this is a superb retrospective.

Harry Nilsson had a hit, a Grammy, and critical success, yet he still didn't have a genuine blockbuster to his name when it came time to finally deliver a full-fledged follow-up to Nilsson Sings Newman, so he decided it was time to make that unabashed, mainstream pop/rock album. Hiring Barbra Streisand producer Richard Perry as a collaborator, Nilsson made a streamlined, slightly domesticated, unashamed set of mature pop/rock, with a slight twist. This is an album, after all, that begins by pining for the reckless days of youth, then segues into a snapshot of suburban disconnectedness before winding through a salute to and covers of old R&B tunes ("Early in the Morning" and "Let the Good Times Roll," respectively), druggie humor ("Coconut"), and surging hard rock ("Jump Into the Fire")…

2009 UK compilation from the late great American singer/songwriter. Harry Nilsson's career began on a high in the '60s, when critics (and even The Beatles) took notice of his amazing vocal and composing talents. Having written hits for Three Dog Night, The Monkees and others, Nilsson finally had a few hits of his own, ironically enough, with other peoples' songs ('Everybody's Talkin'' was written by Fred Neil and 'Without You' was penned by Badfinger's Pete Ham and Tommy Evans). This compilation gathers 18 of Nilsson's best including the aforementioned hits plus 'One', 'Without Her', 'Remember (Christmas)', 'Joy' and more.

The relationship between Harry Nilsson and John Lennon is legendary. They were notorious booze hounds and carousers, getting kicked out of clubs for misbehavior and generally terrorizing L.A. during Lennon's "lost weekend" of 1974. They wanted to make an album together – hell, anyone working at such a peak would – and the result was Pussy Cats, a Nilsson album produced by Lennon. Almost immediately, Nilsson got sick, resulting in a ruptured vocal cord. Not wanting Lennon to stop the sessions, Nilsson never told his friend, stubbornly working his way through the sessions until he lost his voice entirely. These are the sessions that make up Pussy Cats, an utterly bewildering record that's more baffling than entertaining. Like many superstar projects of its time, this is studded with contributions from friends and studio musicians, all intent on having a good time in the studio – which usually means hammering out rock & roll oldies.

UK collection. Bookended by his daughter Annie's recording of the title track and Andy Williams' version of 'Remember (Christmas)', this release in Ace Records' highly regarded Songwriters series celebrates the one and only Harry Nilsson. It's one of the great paradoxes of contemporary pop music that Nilsson, one of the most talented and respected American songwriters of the 20th century, is primarily remembered for his stone classic recordings of two songs written by others: Fred Neil's 'Everybody's Talkin' and Badfinger's 'Without You'. Gotta Get Up aims to remedy that by spotlighting two-dozen Nilsson songs from the years 1965 to 1972, including several of which he made no official recordings. Among the highlights are 'Cuddly Toy' and 'Daddy's Song' performed by Nilsson champions the Monkees, Al Kooper's harmony-filled recording of 'Mournin' Glory Story', Canadian folkie Tom Northcott's version of Nilsson's autobiographical '1941' and the MFQ's Phil Spector-produced 'This Could Be The Night', one of Brian Wilson's favorite records.

Life Line: The Songs of Nilsson 1967-1971 Review by Steve Leggett
Harry Nilsson was always a maverick artist, following his own sense of style in the world of pop, turning out carefully crafted – even baffling – songs that shared no direct affinity with any other artist of his day, although in some ways he resembled Randy Newman (even recording a marvelous album of Newman covers). Both men drew on American Tin Pan Alley traditions, but while Newman used them to craft his own ironic view of the little cruelties and occasional kindnesses of the human condition, there was a part of Nilsson that always wanted to actually be that tradition, making him, in some ways, an extremely crafty, artful and very postmodern vaudeville act stuck just slightly out of time. This collection has plenty of Harry Nilsson gems, including his own version of "One" (a huge hit for Three Dog Night), the fascinatingly realized "1941," the infectious and cartoon-like "Me and My Arrow," and the delightful "I Guess the Lord Must Be in New York City," but it lacks some obvious tracks like his two dance singles "Coconut" and "Jump into the Fire," so it doesn't make the ideal introduction to this unique artist, but there's more than enough here to convince anyone that Nilsson was a one of a kind pop treasure.

At its core, Harry Nilsson's work was tuneful singer-songwriter fare, but the orchestrated arrangements and Nilsson's distinctive voice hinted at something more complex. A talent of many contradictions, his songs are alternately quaint ("Good Old Desk") and disturbing ("1941"), melodramatic ("Without You") and downright silly ("Coconut"). All Time Greatest Hits is exactly that, featuring those songs plus the Midnight Cowboy theme, "Everybody's Talkin'," the original version of "One" (later a hit for Three Dog Night), a couple of Nilsson's terrific interpretations of Randy Newman songs–"Cowboy" and "Caroline"–and much more. Largely forgotten these days, Nilsson is an artist whose oeuvre could do with some reassessment. This is as good as any place to start. –Daniel Durchholz

Harry Nilsson worked at a bank and wrote songs on the side, mostly jingles and pop tunes in the mid-1960s. Under contract with RCA, his first record was a flop, but it yielded hits for The Monkees and Three Dog Night. In the late 1960s Nilsson was everywhere: pal to the Beatles (especially John and Ringo); singer of "Everybody's Talkin'," the theme to the movie Midnight Cowboy (1969); singer of the theme to the TV show The Courtship of Eddie's Father; composer of the soundtrack to the animated movie The Point (with its hit single "Me and My Arrow"); and singer of the number one hit, "Without You." …
