More than a decade ago, saxophonist-composer Ingrid Laubrock met pianist-composer Kris Davis at the recently shuttered historic hang Cornelia Street Cafe in downtown Manhattan, before Laubrock had moved to New York. Over the next years, Laubrock and Davis would inspire and challenge each other within varied musical contexts – and across a number of re-cordings – including Laubrock’s critically-acclaimed quintet Anti-House, as well as other traditional instrumental role-resistant small groups and sprawling orchestral settings.

From March to May 2015, John Zorn composed 300 new tunes that were eventually collected into a book of music he called The Bagatelles. After 5 years of performances around the world in venues large and small, the choicest ensembles have gone into the studio and the recordings are finally being made available in a series of limited edition 4-CD BOX sets. Each set will present four ensembles performing a unique program of Zorn’s Bagatelles.

His visceral and intense performances influenced generations of musicians, artists, poets, filmmakers and creative minds of every description. This CD features six heartfelt tributes performed by the group Winged Serpents, which consists of six of the most original pianists and musical thinkers working today. Each touched by Cecil’s magic in different ways, they perform improvised tributes to this legendary genius who created a new music that transcended all genres.
