With more than eighty operas to his credit, Paisiello rivaled Mozart for success in this competitive field, though his eight keyboard concertos fell short of Mozart’s output in numerical terms. They are, however, unfailingly delightful works whose charm and deftly balanced interplay between the solo instrument and orchestra are characteristic of Paisiello’s appealing style. Although the First Concerto was conceived for harpsichord and the Third and Fifth for fortepiano, each retains its transparent beauty when performed, as here, on a modern piano. The Second and Fourth Concertos are available on Naxos 8.557031.

In their way, the two Brahms cello sonatas are among his most complex works, although the Cello Sonata in F major, Op. 99, is also one of his sunniest. Throughout, in a dozen different ways, Brahmselegantly solves the problem of what to do when his melody instrument is mainly lower than his accompaniment one, and the two sonatas are fascinating essays in register and balance.

The Arcana label continues its successful collaboration with the Archi di Santa Cecilia, the Roman ensemble made up of members of the famous Orchestra of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. The ensemble is led by Luigi Piovano, the orchestra's first cellist since 2007 and a regular partner of Sir Antonio Pappano on piano, his principal conductor; their recording of Brahms cello sonatas will be released this year. The Archi di Santa Cecilia offers us a new recording dedicated to Mozart: the famous serine Eine kleine Nachtmusik K525 and the lesser known but equally brilliant Divertimenti K136, K137 and K138.
