Genre: Jazz, Post Bop, Avant-Garde Jazz

Archie Shepp's 2001 studio album, Deja Vu, released on the premium Japanese audiophile label Venus Records, is a deeply romantic, smoky, and emotionally piercing masterclass in cross-cultural jazz interpretation. Long renowned as one of the fiercest, most uncompromised voices of the 1960s avant-garde revolution, the legendary saxophonist reveals his profound, bruised-reproduction lyricism here, dedicating a gorgeous program primarily to classic French chansons and romantic standards. Backed by an absolute powerhouse rhythm section featuring the soulful, heavy-chord piano architecture of Harold Mabern, the elegant precision of bassist George Mraz, and the immaculate swing of drummer Billy Drummond, Shepp pours his heart into the music. His thick, breathy, and highly expressive tenor saxophone voice completely reinvents material like Les Feuilles Mortes (Autumn Leaves), L’ Ame Des Poetes, and the haunting title track. This pristine recording balances a veteran's fiery, blues-drenched authority with a lush, intimate late-night atmosphere, standing as a brilliant testament to Shepp's enduring acoustic mastery.
