In April of 1996, Ofra Harnoy entered the venerable Abbey Road Studios in London with the London Philharmonic Orchestra to record Edward Elgar’s great cello concerto. Unfortunately, shortly after this event, the end result did not end up where it was supposed to be and was not released to the public. In fact, the whereabouts of the recording went unknown for quite some time, afterward.

Vivaldi is greatly over-rated - a dull fellow who would compose the same form over many times. Such is the opinion of one of the great composers on the music of another great composer. Given the evidence of the present newly re-released complete Vivaldi cello concertos incredulity can be the only response to this assessment. But then Stravinsky was a man who voiced strong, often acerbic and sometimes outrageous opinions on virtually anything suggested to him. He had probably heard few, if any, of these cello concertos and irrespective would it have made any difference?

The main title, “Silent Woods”, and a soft-focus portrait through twigs of the glamorous soloist alerts us to the fact that this is no ordinary version of the Dvorak Cello Concerto. To demote the principal work on the disc like this in favour of an incidental fill-up may seem odd, but this is a version surely aimed less at the regular collector than at the many admirers of Ofra Harnoy. Greatly helped by having a Czech orchestra under such a distinguished Czech specialist as Sir Charles Mackerras.

After suffering a debilitating shoulder injury from years of touring and endless recording sessions, cellist Ofra Harnoy underwent reconstructive surgery in 2015. A successful physical therapy allowed her to return to the stage in 2018 and, earlier this year, to start recording her much anticipated comeback album, Back to Bach. It is an album of profound musicality and passion which features Baroque favourites, such as Bach’s Air from Orchestral Suite No. 3 andBist du bei mir, as well as some lesser known gems from composers such as Allegri and Corelli.
