Few women in music have had as enormous an impact and influence as Patti Smith. The first of the art-punk poets, Smith burst onto the early New York punk scene in 1975 with a series of "music poetry happenings" staged at the legendary CBGB club between 1974 and 1976. A former college dropout who moved to Greenwich Village in the late 1960s, where she developed her skills as a beat poet, Patti Smith eventually discovered that the energetic punk scene of the mid-1970s could work as the perfect vehicle for her controversial poetry and singing style. Having worked initially with a music critic and record store clerk named Lenny Kaye, Smith eventually formed her own band, with Kaye, keyboardist Richard Sohl, bassist Ivan Kral and drummer Dee Jay Daugherty. • They found a home at CBGBs, and began to play there regularly. In 1976, just as The Sex Pistols were changing the face of modern music in the U.K., and as The Ramones were about to do the same stateside, Patti Smith won the attention of Arista Records’ prexy,

Patti Smith completed her contract with Arista Records after 27 years by assembling this compilation, which serves as both a best-of and rarities collection, one disc devoted to each. Disc one is drawn from Smith's eight studio albums (with the exception of a newly recorded cover of Prince's "When Doves Cry"). Having scored only one hit single, "Because the Night," Smith was not constrained by chart performance, and she seems to have chosen the songs that still mean something to her (though in an interview she claimed to have taken fan preferences into consideration). Curiously, given the album title, the epic "Land" is missing, as are such straight-ahead rockers as "Ask the Angels" and "Till Victory." But most of Smith's more impressive album tracks are included, with the selection favoring her 1970s records, an imbalance that is redressed on the second disc, which contains 2001 live recordings of songs from later albums Gone Again…

Patti Smith An acclaimed poet, painter, author, and photographer as well as singer/songwriter, Patti Smith ranks among the most ambitious, unconventional, and challenging artists. When she emerged in the '70s, Smith was hailed as punk rock's poet laureate, delivering the most exciting fusion of rock and poetry since Bob Dylan's heyday with her unabashedly intellectual and uncompromising songwriting. Smith followed her muse wherever it took her, from structured rock songs to free-form experimentalism. Her most avant-garde outings, such as 1975's Horses and the following year's Radio Ethiopia, borrowed improvisation and interplay from free jazz, but remained firmly rooted in primal three-chord rock & roll.

Few women in rock have had as enormous an impact and influence as Patti Smith. The first of the art-punk poets, Smith burst onto the early New York punk scene in 1975 with regular appearances at the legendary CBGB club between 1974 and 1976. A major record deal in 1975 took her far and wide across America, but CBGB's would be her spiritual home and here she returns with a classic, no holds barred performance, on 11th August 1979, long after her career had exploded to the point where she was selling out 5,000 seater auditoriums! For those wanting a more emotional and intimate moment with Patti Smith, you have it right here in this deluxe double disc set.

BROADCAST FUNDRAISER FROM PATTI SMITH CIRCA 1998 In 1996, Patti Smith worked with long-time colleagues Lenny Kaye and Jay Dee Daugherty to record her sixth studio album Gone Again, featuring "About a Boy", a tribute to Kurt Cobain who had committed suicide two years earlier. In the wake of the album s release, Smith toured Europe, then went back into the studio with pretty much the same band to make her follow up record. Peace and Noise was released on September 30th 1997, and featured the track 1959 which was nominated for a Grammy Award the following year. Patti spent a lot of 1998 touring, including dates in Australia and New Zealand supporting Bob Dylan. On November 22nd, Smith performed at WXRT FM s Holiday Concerts For The Kids , an annual fundraiser taking place at The Riviera Theater in Chicago. Performing a superb set drawn from across the girl s extraordinary career, this stunning broadcast recording is now available here on CD for the first time.

'This is the first time a radio station has let us play live since we were banned from WNEW in 1976'. Patti Smith's impassioned expletives seemed to symbolise the explosive reputation that followed her at the height of punk rock, but it didn't stop Oregon's KZEL from airing Patti Smith Group in their volatile prime. Poetry and punk were the bullets and guns of these iconic renegades whose vitriolic performances provided the requisite antidote for generations then, and now. Patti Smith's appearance at The Place in 1978 provides another prime chunk of punk 'n' roll history…. listen and learn! Timeline proudly presents a superbly remastered original broadcast by KZEL-FM of the Patti Smith Group, live in action from 1978.

She'd been a New Yorker since moving to the city in 1967, aged 21. She had a child that she gave up for adoption, met and started a relationship with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe - with whom she shared a room at the infamous Chelsea Hotel for some time - and she discovered the work of French symbolist poet Arthur Rimbaud. She appeared in Warhol Superstar Jackie Curtis's play Femme Fatale with Wayne County, and - for one night only - in Cowboy Mouth which she co-wrote with Sam Shepherd. She was considered for the role of lead vocalist in Blue Oyster Cult, but instead contributed lyrics to many of the band's songs, and she started a relationship with BOC keyboardist Alan Lanier. She contributed articles to rock journals Rolling Stone and Creem.

Until the End of the World is a definite contender for best motion picture soundtrack of the 1990s. With a lineup that includes Talking Heads, Lou Reed, R.E.M., Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Depeche Mode, U2, and others all providing original songs or new covers, it's an absolute joy. Interspersed with Graeme Revell's haunting ambient score, virtually every pop/rock track works perfectly as part of a cohesive whole. "Sax and Violins," recorded during the dying days of Talking Heads, might be the band's most confident moment, as a jazzy background shuffle and keyboards provide compelling momentum underneath David Byrne's sarcastic vocals. Crime & the City Solution could have made an entire career out of the emotional yet existential "The Adversary." R.E.M. and Depeche Mode both contribute touching ballads. "Fretless" is one of the most beautiful tracks to be found in R.E.M.'s discography, documenting a wounded relationship with subtle grace. "Death's Door" is one of those sad numbers Depeche Mode fans have grown to love, with Martin Gore handling the vocals.
