Bella Davidovich (born in 1928) won the prestigious Warsaw International Chopin Competition in 1949, sharing first prize with pianist Halina Czerny-Stefanska. This is a rare recording of Chopin's two Piano concertos, with a warm sense of music. The piano has a weak presence, as if Chopin himself were playing. This recording juxtaposes works, some quite rare, from different stages in Arriaga’s career. Among them are the first and last of his orchestral works, composed in the overture form of this period. In the field of the vocal music, Arriaga wrote, in addition to the above-mentioned opera Los esclavos felices, several church pieces and a series of arias and dramatic scenes. One of them is Herminie, that is here sung by the prestigious sopran singer AInhoa Arteta.

As well as joining the Martin String Quartet as second violin, he formed a violin-and-harpsichord duet with Dart, and their performances led to the formation of the Jacobean Ensemble, an early music group that recorded the Purcell trio sonatas in 1950. Around this time, he began studying conducting with Pierre Monteux at Monteux's school in Maine. Marriner's reputation in general music circles also grew; in 1956 he was appointed principal second violin with the London Symphony Orchestra.
