Steven Wilson Known for an intense work ethic, Steven Wilson is among the U.K.'s most acclaimed and prolific artists. As a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and bandleader, Wilson made a gradual transition from cult status with Porcupine Tree, Bass Communion, No-Man, and Blackfield to mainstream success as a charting solo artist in the 21st century with 2011's Grace for Drowning, 2013's The Raven That Refused to Sing and Other Stories, and 2015's Top 40 prog-pop concept album Hand.Cannot.Erase. He followed with 4½, a six-track mini-album, and in 2017 released To the Bone, a collection that reflected his love of progressive pop. He continued that exploration with a meld of varying pop genres on 2021's The Future Bites, following with an album recorded in isolation, 2023's The Harmony Codex.

Cannot. Erase. is an album rooted in sonic and spiritual modernity… an inventive blend of bleak and brooding industrial soundscapes." — The Guardian

Grace for Drowning is more experimental and more eclectic. For me, the golden period for music was the late sixties and early seventies, when the album became the primary means of artistic expression, when musicians liberated themselves from the 3 minute pop song format, and started to draw on jazz and classical music especially, combining it with the spirit of psychedelia to create journeys in sound I guess you could call them. So, without being retro, my album is a kind of homage to that spirit. There's everything from [Ennio] Morricone-esque film themes to choral music to piano ballads to a 23 minute progressive jazz inspired piece. I've actually used a few jazz musicians this time, which is something I picked up from my work remixing the King Crimson records." - Steven Wilson

Genre: Dark Ambient | RAR 3% Rec. | Label: Soleilmoon Recordings (SDVD5, SOL 155 CD)

The most genuinely bleak Bass Communion album, and one of the few that are actually engaging to listen. A both anxious and oppressed soundscape supplemented by a collection of actual post mortem photos, mostly of little kids, made in the Victorian times. The whole concept reflects Steven Wilson's (Porcupine Tree) fear of having children, a nightmare of witnessing his offspring die.
Loss captures frighteningly well the sense of burden, of losing someone dear, and this emotional weight perfectly framed within the music renders this album a particularly uneasy listening. But its brevity and the strength of ideas certainly makes Loss stand out among Bass Communion records.

Most Porcupine Tree fans already know this, but lead guitarist Steven Wilson is also a keen experimental artist, although he keeps that facet of his activities well separated from his progressive rock career. Pacific Codex is Wilson's (and his side project Bass Communion's) most avant-garde album to date, one geared at connoisseurs of drone music and electro-acoustic music much more than Porcupine Tree's audience. This album features Wilson and Theo Travis using metal sculptures by Steve Hubback to produce sounds. This source material was later extensively processed and assembled by Wilson into two 20-minute pieces. A percussion album this is not, nor is it industrial-sounding, as some readers might be expecting from the above details…

Most Porcupine Tree fans already know this, but lead guitarist Steven Wilson is also a keen experimental artist, although he keeps that facet of his activities well separated from his progressive rock career. Starting in 1994, Steven Wilson began solo recordings described as "experiments in texture," resulting in his work under the name Bass Communion. Atmospherics is a collection of short pieces that are original compositions, remixes, and extracts of pieces from other Bass Communion albums for use in television and radio. Even though these pieces are short, each track has its own unique qualities (in relation to only the other tracks on this album) that result in a listening experience that isn't dulled down by stagnant repetition but is instead a fairly eclectic collection ambient atmospheres…

How does an invitation to create a one minute long piece of music based on a single instrument source become a two and a half hour 3CD epic? Towards the end of 2018 Frans de Waard of Freiband was invited by a Japanese label to create an album of one-minute pieces using only the Casio VL-Tone 1. The VL-Tone is perhaps best known as being the first commercially marketed digital synthesiser, a cheap plastic instrument barely a foot in length…

For prolific British progressive rocker Steven Wilson, the two-CD set Grace for Drowning is his second official solo album, following 2008's Insurgentes. Recording under his own name, Wilson tends to fall somewhere between his popular Porcupine Tree group project and his ambient recordings as Bass Communion. Grace for Drowning's two discs are divided into one called Deform to Form a Star and another called Like Dust I Have Cleared from My Eye, both named after tracks on them. In the relatively sparse lyrics that Wilson sings with a calm, British-accented tenor, he seems melancholy at first, apparently suffering from the aftermath of a romantic breakup. "There's nothing left for me to say or do," he declares in "Postcard." By the second disc, he has become angrier about the situation, but the closing title track finds him reaching resolution and moving on…

Steven Wilson really is a workaholic. Apart from being the singer, guitar player and main songwriter for Porcupine Tree, he has several solo projects and collaborations with others going on. And he's also involved in producing and remixing the work of others. He never takes the easy road. Back in 1989 it wasn't an obvious choice to start a prog rock-psychedelic band, but he did and he managed to make a success out of it. Now it would be easy for him to harvest the success of Porcupine Tree, but instead he puts his energy in less successful side projects.
Bass Communion is his main solo project. It's the oldest one with the most releases, apart from I.E.M. that have been terminated and No-Man, which isn't really a solo project but a collaboration with Tim Bowness…

Starting in 1994, Porcupine Tree's Steven Wilson began solo recordings described as “experiments in texture,” resulting in his work under the name Bass Communion. Eschewing synths and keyboards, Steven, in this guise, works with sampled live performances of a variety of instruments, sometimes with the help of other musicians like Robert Fripp, to create a series of fine ambient/electronic pieces. Two self-titled albums appeared by the end of the ’90s, the second of which featured a bonus EP including further work and experiments.
