Although the Misunderstood were among the best obscure psychedelic bands – indeed, among the best obscure '60s rock bands of any kind – they barely got to record anything before tragic circumstances broke them up. The discovery of this bunch of previously unknown mid-'60s acetates, then, was big news to psychedelic rock aficionados, though most of this actually comes from their garage R&B days rather than the psychedelic peak they attained with their late-1966 lineup. The first nine of these 14 tracks come from sessions spanning mid-1965 to early 1966, and show them as a ferocious, above-average moody raw R&B-based group, somewhat in the mold of a more guitar-oriented Animals.

In early 1966, with John Peel as producer, the Misunderstood went into Gold Star studio in Los Angeles to make some demos. Although the tapes have disappeared, an acetate of some of the songs still exists, from which eight tracks (two of which had previously been released) were rescued for reissue on the first disc of this double CD. Judged against their magnificent recordings in Britain in late 1966 (with slightly different personnel), it's a bit of a letdown. The group at this point were a competent but not extraordinary blues-rock act, offering competent renditions of standards by Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed, and the like that only hinted at the originality that would blossom on their U.K. sessions. Indeed, the two tracks that have previously been available ("Shake Your Money Maker" and a wild, extended "I'm Not Talkin'" with ferocious distorted guitar breaks) are by far the best in the set…

This double disc CD brings together two versions of The Misunderstood – the classic 60’s psychedelic band (their immortal tracks being found on the CD ‘Before The Dream Faded’ which was nicely reviewed by the Seth Man). Disc 1 entitled ‘The Legendary Gold Star Album’ presents the bluesy songs the band recorded in California in 1966 under the production of the late great John Peel who discovered the band while he was over in the USA. The collection is well presented and is reminiscent of the tracks presented after the classic six psychedelic songs on ‘Before The Dream Faded’, but they have a slightly clearer sound here as they’re taken from an acetate and the quality partialy 'restored'.
