Das Album erscheint mit einem ausführlichen Essay, in dem der Pianist über das Werk und seine Geschichte spricht. Und er reflektiert über seine Interpretationsentscheidungen für eine Aufnahme, von der er 25 Jahre lang geträumt hat. »… für mich liegt das Geniale der Goldberg-Variationen nicht im Allgemeinen, sondern im Besonderen«, sagt Ólafsson. »Während sich jede einzelne Variation entfaltet, muss man völlig gepackt sein von ihrer spezifischen Dramatik und Emotion, hineingezogen in ihren kleinen, wundervollen Mikrokosmos und erfüllt von der Freude, ihn zu entdecken.«
