This four-LP set, which is now also available as a three-CD box, is easily the definitive Fletcher Henderson package. Between 1923-38, Henderson's orchestra was one of the finest swing bands in the world, and during 1923-27 (until Duke Ellington's emergence) it was the first and the best. The arrangements of Don Redman in the early days set the pace for jazz; Benny Carter and Horace Henderson also wrote some important charts before Henderson himself finally developed into a major arranger in 1932. This Columbia set is not complete, but it includes 64 selections, at least 60 of them gems. This essential box (which contains three wonderful versions of "King Porter Stomp") belongs in everyone's jazz collection.

This essential 3-CD set, lovingly assembled, annotated and re-mastered, sets out to remedy a terrible historical faux pas. Fletcher Henderson is one of the seminal figures in the history of jazz–specifically, in the evolution of the modern big band. A STUDY IN FRUSTRATION chronicles this unsung hero's breakthroughs and innovations. After all, his band was a proving ground for many of early jazz's greatest soloists and arrangers; he codified standard practices in terms of voicing the brass and reed sections; and anticipated the swing era by a decade (when Benny Goodman rose to renown on the bedrock of Henderson's original riffs and charts).

Dating from August of 1923 (with "The Dicty Blues") through May of 1938 (with "Moten Swing"), THE FLETCHER HENDERSON STORY also plots the history of big band jazz from its earliest society band offshoots, through the modern era when it became the sound (and beat) an entire globe danced to. Classic 1924 cuts such as "Shanghai Special" and "Copenhagen" show a young Louis Armstrong redefining the parameters of jazz improvisations and phrasing.

Among the great soloists featured on A STUDY IN FRUSTRATION are Coleman Hawkins, Don Redman, Benny Carter, Fats Waller, Walter Johnson, Big Sid Catlett, Rex Stewart, Roy Eldridge, Chu Berry and Ben Webster.
