The James Payne story begins in Theodore, Alabama where at the age of 9, his father handed him his first bass guitar. Later that same year, his father handed him his first alto saxophone, which he began playing in middle school. He went on to perform in the high school chorus and on to perform at church with a great singer named Tawanna Black. In 1982, Little Milton called him Little Luther Vandross of Mobile, Alabama.

He started singing gospel at the age of 13 with a small group called The Sensational Five. They sang all over the Midwest, traveling to cities like Detroit, Michigan and Chicago, Illinois. He eventually moved on to other groups like the Perryman Brothers, Sunset Jubilee, and the Mobile Soul Stirrers, as well as the Singing Sons, all of which were from Mobile, Alabama. He also sang with The Dynamic Couselors of Detroit, Michigan.

In 1984, he started a group called U-Can’t Touch This, out of Pensacola, Florida. They later moved to Mobile, where they began performing with the Apollo Blues Band of Mobile. He later moved on to perform with a very outstanding group known as The Fabulous Tip Tops, also of Mobile.

By 1999, after leaving The Tip Tops, he started touring with Blues Unlimited, which he founded along with Clay Knight while touring with David Brinston. In 2001, he became an artist of Mr. Tee Record Company, performing with his own band known as the Justice Show Band. He then journeyed to Jacksonville, Florida where he recorded his first hit singles, “Fat Woman” and “Treat Her Right”.

James Payne sums up his prodigious accomplishments by saying, “I’ve been heavily inspired by great singers of the world like Johnny Taylor, Little Milton Campbell, and Marvin Sease. But mostly by my admired cousin Rev. William Parrish of Theodore, Alabama.”
