This recording proposes to illustrate the musical context in which evolved the Flemish painter Jan van Eyck.

At that time, the duchy of Burgundy, under Philip the Good (Dijon, 1396-Bruges, 1467), father of Charles the Bold (Dijon, 1433- Nancy, 1477), is much more powerful than the kingdom of France, weakened by the Hundred Years War. His sovereign, Charles VII, is discredited by a hint of illegitimacy, and it is Joan of Arc who will lead him to Reims to be crowned in 1429.

Philip the Good, after the assassination of his father Jean without fear in 1419, (commissioned by Charles VII) inherited the duchy of Burgundy. He is 23. In 1428, after two widowhoods, thinking of his descendants, he sent an embassy to Portugal to ask the Infanta Isabella in marriage. A report of the time would confirm that the ambassador was none other than the painter Jan Van Eyck himself! In January 1429, at the castle of Aviz, he executed two portraits of the princess that letters to Philippe le Bon, February 12, one by sea, the other by land.

Let's imagine now that during this trip, Jan van Eyck met John Dunstable in France, Guillaume Dufay in Italy, after leaving Gilles Binchois who was himself at the court of Burgundy. On the other hand, he can not have met Robert Morton, who was born in 1430. But it offers us a transition with the next generation of this Franco-Flemish school so rich and fruitful for the next two centuries.

John Dunstable (~ 1390-1453) entered the service of the Duke of Bedford before 1427. He would have traveled with him when he was Regent of France (1422-1429, period during which the dolphin, future Charles VII, disinherited, could access the throne of France). He later worked at the court of Queen Jeanne of Navarre (1427-1436) and for the Duke of Gloucester.

His epitaph says "prince of music, mathematician and astronomer". He is cited as the composer whose influence was decisive on G. Binchois and G. Dufay by his harmonic innovations (introduction of the third as consonantal interval). Van Eyck could have met him through the kingdom of Navarre, before crossing the Pyrenees …

Italy is not on the way to Spain and Portugal, but back to Burgundy, it is not absurd to imagine that Van Eyck took the same route as one of his portraits, by sea from Granada. There may have met Mohamed VIII, the last ruler of the Moors of Andalusia, the three monotheistic religions, Judaism, Catholicism and Islam have coexisted for five centuries, in a cultural and artistic exchange of great wealth, before the Moors and Jews were expelled by Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile in 1492.

At that time, Guillaume Dufay is indeed in Italy. He is a member of the papal chapel in Rome from 1428 to 1433. Probably born in Cambrai around 1400, (where he died in 1474), he spent a large part of his life in Italy, from 1420 until 1440: Pesaro, Bologna, Rome, then Florence, where he participated in March 1436 in the inauguration of the dome Brunelleschi architectural masterpiece that crowns the Cathedral of Santa Maria dei Fiore. It is for this memorable occasion that was composed the motet Nuper rosarum flores, ultimate jewel of the isorythmic art.

Returning to Dijon with van Eyck, we find Gilles Binchois, who is a member of the ducal chapel of Burgundy between 1427 and 1452. He was probably born in Mons around 1400, and never left Flanders (Lilles, Soignies) in outside of his stay in Burgundy. During the year 1424 he served the Earl of Suffolk as a soldier of the English army … the Duchy of Burgundy, allied with England, was at war with the kingdom of France.

The rondeau was the most popular form of Gilles Binchois, composer par excellence of the "chanson bourguignonne", characterized by a structure with three voices, most often the first is the only one with lyrics. Dunstable's song "O rosa bella" already presents this characteristic, and has paved the way for a type of composition of which Dufay and Binchois have become the best-known representatives.
