Lately it seems all pop roads lead to R&B. A post-Timbaland, post-broken-beat nexus where The Bottom Line and studio experimentation meet in surprisingly joyful union, a place where mainstream and underground forms seem strangely pre-destined for collision.

Add one Scot Joseph Malik to the party, putting his singer/songwriter background to work in coordinating Diverse's decidedly post-club affair. It goes something like this: If soul troubadours Shuggie Otis, Bill Withers and Curtis Mayfield were brought up in UK clubs listening to the techno by way of batucada rhythms of Jazzanova, then copped a chilled anti-gangsta lean to the West African music of Baaba Maal, Mansour Seck and Ali Farka Toure, it might sound like Diverse.

A lot to take in? Well, yeah, diversity has always been too much for some. And for Malik, "love for all things" is a credo - lyrics concerning racism, rat-race oppression and love being the album's motifs. The Curtis Mayfield-like "Soul Love" criticizes a lover for leaving him for money, while his cover of Bill Wither's celebration-of-all-things "Take It All In and Check It All Out" weaves an acoustic guitar and electric piano over a pulsing 4/4 kick. Elsewhere, "Futuristica" finds its roots in Compost's now-trademark neo-Brazilian riddims while the lead melody on "Ibotribe" is provided by a Calimba (aka thumb piano). Wrapped in a glossy house sheen (courtesy of collaborator/multi-instrumentalist/producer David Donnelly), Malik is bound to attract a decidedly diverse listenership. A testament to the idea itself.

Joseph Malik - Diverse (2002)

Vom entspannten Flow mal ganz abgesehen. ~Burkhard Welz intro.de
