Louisiana chansonnier and axe wielding patron saint of hopeless causes Kevin Gordon weaves southern gothic tales of lovable losers to the beat of juke joint blues. Tilt and Shine has the wooly headed feel of an opiate high, full of fuzzy electric guitars droning like cicadas in the heat. This album is a day drunk romp with a bard of the swamp. Case in point: opening track “Fire At The End Of The World”. Finally, a song about learning to buy and sell good drugs from your grade school’s drug prevention program (taught by the local police force). Hell, that’s how I learned. I can still remember them burning weed for us so we could identify it’s odor. I thought I was the only one.
“Saint On A Chain” is more refined, and exposes Gordon for his MFA with devilish writer’s tricks like the lyric “every river’s a daughter of a dirty rain,” (just think about that in sing song for a minute) and it’s open ended leave. Before things get all academic Gordon busts into the juke joint boogie of “One Road Out (Angola Rodeo Blues)”. Trash can drums and blown amp blues back the story of rodeo life being the one way in and out of the infamous Texas prison. Next, slide guitar and pedal steel rise like heat waves off the psychedelic “Gattling Gun”. By “Devaull’s Bluff” all the elements have stewed: soulful strumming mingles with rock guitar squawks, and open country percussion cleans your clock while psych organ grinds.
Tilt and Shine is Kevin Gordon’s best effort yet, on it he uses the force of fearsome guitar, and strong words to engage you for the length of the album.
