Thomas Koppel - Los Angeles Street Concerto (2006)
Contemporary Classical | Dacapo | 2006 | 50:57 | EAC (FLAC, cue, log) | Booklet | RS | 245 MB
Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra, Kremerata Baltica, Bo Holten (conductor), Michala Petri (recorder); Lars Hannibal (guitar)

The two concertos by Thomas Koppel (1944-2006) on the present disc are fresh, lively, and often moving works that, although written in a freely tonal idiom, never become anodyne. Instead, the ear is continuously challenged by shifting colors and harmonies, and most certainly by the virtuoso solo writing that Michala Petri handles with considerable aplomb.

Thomas Koppel's (1944-2006) career as a composer and musician was unique in the world of Danish music. It had its sensational beginning when he began composing as a child. As a teenager he was well on his way towards a dual career as composer and classical concert pianist, but abandoned this in favour of avant-garde rock music and later an idealistic career as a musician on the political left. For the last fifteen years of his life he worked again with music scored for classical ensembles, but his output was always determined by an uncompromising attitude to life and society.

Highlight of the disc is the beautiful recorder concerto Moonchild's Dream that has an ethereal cinematic quality to it which is not surprising considering that Koppel wrote music for theater, film and opera. Born in Sweden to the Jewish family that was fleeing occupied Denmark, later in life he moved to US. He unexpectedly passed away in 2006 while in Puerto Rico. Unfortunately not much of his music is recorded and he is not well known outside Denmark. It is a shame since what few works of his I have heard are achingly gorgeous. His music definately deserve to be heard. I will share soon another version of Moonchild's Dream also played by Michala Perti but with another orchestra - English Chamber Orchestra this time, conducted by Okko Kamu on a 1999 RCA disc. That in itself is an outsanding album with several splendid recorder concertos written for Michala Perti. (Front cover picture is made at composer's funeral).
Keep an eye on the wonderful music of his brother Anders Koppel that I am going to share soon.

If you like clarinet, bass clarinet or saxophone for that matter, don't miss my recent release of clarinetist/composer Evan Ziporyn's wonderful blend of classical, jazz and world music - Link. There is a lot of beautiful writing for winds there, particularly memorable in two works - Tree Frog and Walk the Dog. Fusion of contemporary music and jazz rarely gets that good.:)
