Jazz / Cool / Alto Saxophone

This excellent set gives one a definitive look at altoist Lee Konitz at a period of time when he was breaking away from being a sideman and a student of Lennie Tristano and asserting himself as a leader. With pianist Ronnie Ball, bassist Percy Heath, and drummer Alan Levitt, Konitz explores a variety of his favorite chord changes, some of which were disguised by newer melodies such as "Hi Beck," "Subconscious Lee," and "Sound Lee." Among the other high points of this well-recorded set are "Foolin' Myself" and a lengthy exploration of "If I Had You."
In addition to great music, the line-up backing Knoitz is superb: Ronnie Ball's piano is in in the spirit of the music and Percy Heath's playing here foreshadows his tasteful and amazing bass work for the Modern Jazz Quartet for over two decades.

For my fellow jazz geeks this was recorded live on January 5, 1954 at Boston's Storyville Club. The MC listed as announcer on tracks 1 and 7 is a somewhat renown Boston radio personality for station WHDH. His radio name was John McLellan, but his real name was John Fitch. There are interviews of him interviewing Charlie Parker and Paul Desmond as well - apparently he had a thing for alto saxophonists.

If I have one complaint about this album it's the drummer and bassist are a little too low in the mix. Not a big problem considering that Ball's piano and Konitz' alto are very clear, and since it was a live album recorded with 1954 technology the fidelity is probably better than can be expected.
