Review by Rick Anderson

Machine Head's third album finds them sounding a bit looser and less constricted musically than they have in the past, but their aggro-metal with funk overtones is still plenty dense and emotionally claustrophobic. Aided by modern metal producer extraordinaire Ross Robinson (who has also helped Korn and Limp Bizkit get in touch with their inner Lemmy), Machine Head continues to explore themes of alienation, loss, and abuse, but singer/guitarist Robert Flynn is singing a bit more this time out; on "Silver" he almost croons. Unfortunately, while his up-tempo bellow is pleasantly generic, his singing voice and delivery both sound like they were lifted directly from middle-period Eddie Vedder. Flynn and the rest of the band are actually at their best in funky, hip-hop mode, as on "Enter the Phoenix" and the early section of "From This Day." Amazingly, they also deliver a respectful cover of the Police's "Message in a Bottle," one which, disappointingly, adds little more than crunchy guitars to the mix. Overall, though, this is a pretty satisfying aggro-rock affair. allmusicguide

Band Info:

Machine Head is an American heavy metal band from Oakland, California, formed in 1992. Founded by singer and guitarist Robb Flynn and bassist Adam Duce, and has only had 4 personnel changes since its inception 17 years ago. The current lineup of the band comprises Flynn (vocals, guitar), Duce (bass), Phil Demmel (guitar), and Dave McClain (drums). Machine Head is one of the pioneering bands in the New Wave of American Heavy Metal.[6][7]

Machine Head was formed by ex-Vio-lence ex-Forbidden member Robb Flynn. Flynn felt musically unfulfilled and requested to start a side project. When he was told he couldn't, he left the band and formed Machine Head in 1992 with Adam Duce, Logan Mader and Tony Constanza. Though the band's first album, Burn My Eyes, was a big success in Europe where it garnered attention on MTV's Headbangers Ball, but in America (with HBB taken off the air during the grunge movement) Machine Head would not have have success until later albums. The band nearly disbanded in 2002 after negotiating off of its label, Roadrunner Records, when controversy surrounding Machine Head's 4th release "Supercharger" (released 2 weeks after Sept.11th, 2001) resulted in their songs and their then-current video for the song "Crashing Around You' (which featured burning buildings) being pulled from all media outlets. The band re-signed with Roadrunner soon after and has released two triumphant albums since, 2003's "Through the Ashes of Empires", and 2007's The Blackening, which earned Machine Head its first Grammy Award nomination.wikipedia
