To be honest, I’m not at all that sure if I like Nyman’s music. According to me, the hype around this composer is more spectacular than his talent. Alright, that’s my personal opinion; please ignore it if you disagree.
Nyman based the aforelying music on some lascivious poems of Italian Renaissance author Pietro Aretino (1492-1556). I thought I should have this album as a musical illustration to Aretino’s delightfully dirty sonnets. Somewhere on my bookshelves I have an edition of them – a little booklet containing the equally delightful engravings which inspired this free-spirited author.
Basically, this album offers orchestral minimal music, an opera soprano a la belle epoque on top of it.
Not bad. A little trendy perhaps, but not bad.
Very nice: in the booklet you can find both the original Italian sonnets and their English translation, as well as a couple of erotic engravings. I liked it a lot.
