Gone are the longtime Anderson images of the vagabond/sage (the group is clad in white jumpsuits on the cover) – also gone are the historical immersion of their music and anything resembling Dickensian, much less Elizabethan sensibilities. And nearly gone was Jethro Tull itself, for A started life as an Ian Anderson solo project but ended up as a Jethro Tull release, probably for commercial reasons. The difference is probably too subtle for most people to comprehend anyway. It is more reflective than Tull's usual work, but lacks the sudden, loud hard rock explosions that punctuate most of the group's albums.

Frogg Café are a Long Island quintet who started off as a Zappa cover band, named Lumpy Gravy. Their material is a strong slice of uniquely American prog, an innovative blend of Zappa featuring Mahavishnu-like violin, Chicago-style brass choirs and hints of Univers Zero. Their music alternates from light, airy piano and violin parts to darker, intense guitar passages, creating a dynamic contrast; the use of the trumpet also adds interesting tonal colours.

This issue of the St. John Passion is also a special event in the world of music, because a choice has been made for Bachs very earliest version of this work (1724) in a reconstruction by musicologist Dr. Pieter Dirksen. The Netherlands Bach Society performs the work in a small-scale scoring with ten singers and eleven instrumentalists, no distinction being made between choristers and soloists. According to the most recent research, this scoring constitutes a very close approximation of the ensemble with which Bach gave the first performance of the St. John Passion. Bachs St. John Passion is less well known to some than his St. Matthew Passion: unjustly so, in many peoples opinion. Judge for yourself, as you treat both your ears and eyes to this performance of the Netherlands Bach Society…

For the true follow-up to 2002's Every Day - since 2003's Man with a Movie Camera soundtrack had actually been recorded four years earlier - J. Swinscoe & co.'s Cinematic Orchestra produced another soundtrack, this one virtually invisible. Not long after Every Day's release, Swinscoe began writing music for another Cinematic LP, but in another direction from where he'd gone previously. This was a series of quiet, contemplative instrumentals, with Rhodes keyboards and reedy clarinets, simply begging for a narrative (call them orchestrations for cinema). With scripts for each supplied by a friend - each track got its own story, together comprising different scenes from a single life - and a series of unpeopled photographs supplied by Maya Hayuk, Cinematic Orchestra had the narrative they needed for their invisible soundtrack…

Norwegian pianist Tord Gustavsen has built a huge and enthusiastic worldwide following through his ECM discs and touring, and 'Restored, Returned' will broaden that popularity still further. After a trilogy of trio recordings - 'Changing Places', 'The Ground', and 'Being There' - which explored a clearly-demarcated melodic terrain, here is a strikingly different album from Tord Gustavsen at the head of a reconfigured band. Into the group come two Norwegian improvisers familiar to ECM listeners, bassist Mats Eilertsen and saxophonist Tore Brunborg.

Well preceded by a pair of killer singles ("It Just Won't Do" and "Less Talk More Action!"), The Little Ginger Club Kid aims to be an audacious debut full-length for Tim Deluxe. And indeed this colorful release by Darren Emerson's generally on-point Underwater Records label largely hits the mark, bundling those killer singles with nine similarly fun-spirited tracks that should delight anyone who'd already taken note of this talented Brit and his exuberant style of vocal-driven house music. If you're not one of those people who'd already taken note of Deluxe when "It Just Won't Do" and "Less Talk More Action!" were burning up dancefloors from London to Ibiza during 2002-2003…

Dominique Visse and his group Ensemble Clément Janequin have been involved in many outstanding projects over the years, but this 2002 Harmonia Mundi recording has to be one of the most spectacular; the Missa "Et ecce terrae motus" (aka, "The Earthquake Mass") of Antoine Brumel. Brumel is one of many mid-renaissance composers whose reputations are so far overshadowed by Josquin Desprez that – like Rodney Dangerfield – they "just don't get no respect." In Brumel's own time, however, he was considered one of Josquin's equals and his death in 1512 was widely observed in a number of "déplorations." Although the mass itself survives in only a single manuscript copy, it bears the signatures of singers who revived the work in Munich in 1570 – probably close to a century after it was first given – and among them is a bass named Orlandus Lassus.

"Andando el tiempo" - the dynamic title is self-explanatory. As time moves on, so does one’s playing; and that has been an impulse behind the artistic development of Gerardo Núñez. He has always been one step ahead. That has brought him the status as a moderniser of flamenco. Gerardo Núñez is never a follower of trends. His work is defined by a strong personality which seeks its expression in flamenco. Gerardo Núñez goes his own way. He does that with a clear understanding and demonstrates it with his six strings.Already with his first release in 1987 "Flamencos en Nueva York" the world of flamenco resounded with an echo like a drum roll. In both technical and musical respects Gerardo Núñez can be dubbed an "innovator", even if he feels unhappy with such a description. "Talk about fusion, and above al…

Vocalist Asha Puthli was well-known in her native India before she moved to New York and made a splash in the jazz world. For her Western recording debut, Puthli lent her vocals to "What Reason Could I Give" and "All My Life," a pair of ballads on Ornette Coleman's 1971 Science Fiction LP. She recorded two LPs for Columbia, 1974's Asha Puthli and 1978's The Devil Is Loose, but success in America eluded her, even as she matured into a European chart mainstay. Puthli's popularity grew not in the U.S. but in Europe where she signed a record deal with CBS. Her solo albums reflected her interest in pop, rock, soul, funk and disco. She gravitated toward the glam world of Elton John and T. Rex. Music critic Ann Powers in The New York Times called Puthli a "fusion pioneer".
