Nat King Cole's album 10th Anniversary proved to be an interesting watershed in his career. First finding fame as a popular jazz pianist leading a trio, Cole gradually added more and more vocals until he had pretty much left jazz behind for a full-time career as a singer. This compilation, issued on LP in 1955, drew from unreleased recordings from both his jazz and easy listening sessions. One can hear Cole's growth as a singer in his jazz tracks, scatting a bit in his "Lulubelle," though it is his impressive piano that dominates another original, "I'm an Errand Boy for Rhythm." "Peaches" is a rather pedestrian affair with the heavy-handed bongos of Jack Costanzo proving to be more of a distraction than a benefit. The easy listening vocals are a mixed bag. "Too Soon" is overwhelmed by Nelson Riddle's strings, though Dave Cavanaugh's campy Western satire "Rough Ridin'" fares better. Liner note writer James Ritz sings praises for Les Baxter's scoring of the ballad "The Story of My Wife," though the bland arrangement and melody bring to mind the prevailing attitude among other arrangers of the '50s ("The less Baxter, the better!").

This CD compilation includes two separate sessions by the legendary soprano saxophonist Sidney Bechet and a third date by clarinetist Claude Luter. Bechet's hearty vibrato dominates the four octet tracks, though his French band provides more than adequate support for him. Trumpeter Gerard Bayol and trombonist Benny Vasseur get in their licks in the laid back "On the Sunny Side of the Street." The quartet session is more interesting, just for the opportunity to hear drummer Kenny Clarke and bassist Pierre Michelot outside their normal bop recordings; the pianist is Eddie Bernard (who was also present on the octet recordings)…

Lana Lane's second cover collection album is quite different from the first. While Covers Collection (2002) had several tracks that were not classics and some bands quite obscure, this time she decided to focused almost entirely on classic stuff. The only real surprise is the two Foreigner tracks included here: the hard rocking Long Way From Home and the more progressive Starrider (both from their self titled debut of 1977, the latter certainly one of their best). The remaining tracks were from more obvious choices like Pink Floyd, Moody Blues, Heart, Cream and The Jefferson Airplane…

Oorlogswinter (Winter in Wartime) is a Dutch film directed by Martin Koolhoven, based on the book by Jan Terlouw. The story takes place near the end of World War II in the Netherlands. We follow a 14th years old boy named Michiel who's desperately searching for some adventure and wants to join the resistance. His father, and mayor of the town, is annoyed by his son's behaviour, because he wants nothing else than to preserve the peace. When Michiel suddenly gets an assignment from the resistance, he's determined to carry it out. Pino Donaggio has written a masterpiece of a score and one of the best Dutch and Donaggio scores ever.

One of those uniquely '70s groups, Middle of the Road were a Scottish pop vocal group whose singles "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep," "Tweedle Dee Tweedle Dum," and "Soley Soley" were huge European hits, selling in the tens of millions. Formed by Sally Carr (vocals), Ian McCredie (guitar), Eric McCredie (bass), and drummer Ken Andrew in 1970 (the group had been playing together since 1967, but under the moniker of "Part Three") Middle of the Road had trouble finding success until they uprooted from the United Kingdom and settled in Italy…

Stephen Bruton's fifth album, produced by Ross Hogarth, whose credits include Melissa Etheridge, Ziggy Marley, Gov't Mule, R.E.M. and John Mellencamp. Bruton has produced albums for Alejandro Escovedo, Marcia Ball, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Hal Ketchum, Storyville and Chris Smither. He's played guitar for Bob Dylan and Kris Kristofferson, and his songs have been covered by Bonnie Raitt, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson and Patty Loveless. This album features bass player Yoggie Musgrove and drummer Steve Ferrone (who plays with Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers). On keyboards are Little Feat's Bill Payne and Austin player and composer Stephen Barber. Bruton and his buddy Randy Jacobs handle guitar duties. Old Fort Worth pal Glen Clark spices the mix with his harmonica while, Lon Price, leads the horn section on a number of tracks. Bruton's penchant for collaboration finds him co-writing nine of the album's songs with friends like former NRBQ guitarist Big Al Anderson and Memphis rocker John Kilzer.

Part of the fun of listening to Universal Music's Jazz in Paris series is digging into their compilations of obscure recordings, such as these two mid-'50s sessions, led by Buddy Banks and Bobby Jaspar. Banks, originally a saxophonist who switched to bass, had arrived in Europe after World War II; he is accompanied by drummer Roy Haynes, pianist Bob Dorough, and guitarist Jimmy Gourley. The leader takes the spotlight in a subtle take of "Yesterdays," though a strange clicking mars an otherwise swinging "I Love You." Banks' group also offers serviceable interpretations of modern pieces like Gerry Mulligan's "Line for Lyons" and Milt Jackson's "Bag's Groove"…

With Jack's 4th collaboration with Trent Gardner (Magellan) and Robert Berry in 5 years, we see the music really coalesce stylistically into something distinctive. The musical range is still there, but Trent, Robert and Jack have developed a sound that's unique and quite unmistakable. The album is extremely broad-ranged, exploring the mature themes of war, politics, marriage, and spirituality. But Jack makes these explorations without taking himself too seriously, and without preaching or being too demanding upon the listener. The music is rock with progressive and jazz influences, focusing on unique textures and feels, with a sophisticated palette of exploration.

With his previous releases, pianist Peter Zak has focused on standards and works by a variety of jazz greats. This time around he focuses on McCoy Tyner, a veteran who has written a formidable array of compositions during his long career, though he has rarely, if ever, been the focus of a recorded tribute. Zak makes up for that oversight with this rewarding session, joined by his working trio consisting of longtime bassist Paul Gill and drummer Quincy Davis (the latter also appeared on Seed of Sin). Zak puts his own stamp on each piece, not merely trying to copy Tyner's style (which would be pointless), opening with a snappy take of "Blues on the Corner" that also features his sidemen.

The German act Moca's first full-length album slips excitingly between categories, and by its hard-to-categorize nature is infinitely more interesting and listenable than the sorts of albums where the listener hears four measures and can already peg exactly which of the myriad subcategories of electronic dance music to slot it into. At its base, Wroooooooooam is pure old-school house, early-'90s style, with its prominent, easy-to-digest beats and occasional snippets of soul diva vocals. But on top of that, there's more than a little downtempo mellowness.
