Peter Bernstein and the Tilden Webb Quartet are featured in this live set from 2012, recorded at Cory Weeds' Cellar Jazz Club in Vancouver.

Jazz musician, label owner and educator Cory Weeds set up the Cellar in Vancouver as a creative space for both local and international artists. The club has since ceased opperations, but we revisit the thriving atmosphere with a live recording from the American guitarist Peter Bernstein, captured at the venue in February 2012. Bernstein is joined by the Canadian pianist Tilden Webb and his trio.

There are three main aspects to Peter Bernstein's playing that make him one of the most important jazz guitarists of his generation: First there is his incredible ability to swing - he makes every note and chord feel good, and gives the impression that playing the guitar is effortless; Second is Peter's musical economy. There is a tendency among some musicians to equate 'good improvising' with the number of notes one plays. However Bernstein's approach is simply to make every note count. He definitely does not lack facility but Bernstein never falls into the trap of speed for its own sake. His improvisations have direction and meaning; Thirdly, and perhaps most impressively, Peter's guitar sound knocks your socks off. It's clear, warm, and singing from top to bottom. Like a great grand piano whose eighty-eight keys sound equal and true, Peter's rich sonority is present no matter what register he plays in.
