Taught By Animals - Possible Future Eden (2017)

All Albums have a story behind how they were made but this one was especially unique for me in the way in was conceived, recorded and mixed. Initially it was two jams which I recorded over two sessions in February 2015. The inspiration was to be a Psychedelic Jazz/ Psych Rock project imagined by myself (elk) and Artist/Musician Paul Sloan. We envisaged improvised psychedelic rock that included moments of spontaneous free psych jazz. We believed these moments to be provided by the cosmos and thus ‘cosmos’ was our cue to go into these more psychedelic and spontaneous areas. The second half of the first session was lost (as we forgot to press record) theses offerings will never be heard and potentially contained the very best bits which we gladly offered as a sacrifice to the cosmos.

We captured these initial jams in a unique way and we liked how they came out. We set the drums up outside along side a natural slab of slate and quartzite rock in Waterfall Gully believing the ancestral knowledge inside the rock formation would provide further cosmic energy. There was a times a saturation and curious distortion being captured which we interpreted to be a good thing, dismissing the conventions of the typical recording process. The bass was also recorded outside. On the two occasions we set up and recorded we were joined by a giant spider which made an impressive web between where the drums were set up and the bass. Naturally we saw this as a good omen and the spider seemed to dig it too.

I then set about editing the jams. Guitars, synths, horns, percussion and vocals were all added bit by bit over the following year. The result of which is this album.
