Early material from Nat Adderley. His pithy, pungent trumpet and cornet work is effective in a hard bop context, although his own work outside his brother's group has never seemed quite as effective. His backing group included Kenny Clarke in a non-Modern Jazz Quartet role, plus pianist Hank Jones, bassist Wendell Marshall, and Jerome Richardson on tenor sax and flute, playing with more punch than on either his Quincy Jones or Oliver Nelson large group dates.
In my view, That's Nat is the best album of Nat Adderley's recording career as a leader. While I've always agreed that Nat did his largest body of good work in his brother Julian's shadow, this album clearly shows Nat's great chops in the studio with a stellar supporting cast. One listen to Big E or Ann Springs will convince anyone of this album's value as a must-have in any hard bop collection. Wendell Marshall's cool, crystal clear walking bass on Big E is underpinned by Kenny Clarke's gently insistent and metronomic drums. The apparent simplicity masks a wealth of tight foundation that supports brilliant solos and melodies by Nat, Jerome Richardson, and the ever-noble Hank Jones on piano. Richardson's full and rich flute opening on You Better Go Now is dreamy, and helps everyone one understand how to deliver a ballad with passion and flare. It's a hard to find album, but well worth the search.
