The Pirates - Out of Their Skulls (2 CD)

Nearly two-and-a-half hours of madman rockin' music from the late Johnny Kidd's backing band, dating from their successful resurrection in 1976 at the behest to faithful disciple Wilko Johnson. Including all three reunion albums as well as several rare singles and previously unissued material, this is ear-opening stuff for the most part. A generation older than their punk contemporaries, legendary Mick Green and his men make most of that breed sound like pretenders. Listen to All In It Together and you hear a great single. Listen to Please Don't Touch or Something Very Strange and you hear where Dr Feelgood got their act. Though bassist Johnny Spence's vocals sometimes flirt with blackface this is largely ace stuff, perfect to accompany that sixth pint!

Enjoy this BLAST of SUPERB Pub-Rock!

Buried treasure.

Despite the fact that it is fairly difficult to source this CD, it's still grossly overpriced (I bought this a few years back for around £13). That said, the material on this collection is (for the most part) superb and shows the band at their absolute peak (1977-1979). In effect, what you get is the "Out Of Their Skulls" album and 39 bonus tracks which include the "Skull Wars" and "Happy Birthday Rock & Roll" sets. Admittedly, the material on the latter does tend to take a fairly big dip but still contains one or two gems. The playing throughout is first rate. The rhythm section of Johnny Spence and Frank Farley is as tight as the proverbial duck's butt and the fretwork of Mick Green has to be heard to be believed. This is an act who really know how to cut it on stage…compare the studio and live versions of "All In It Together" to hear what I'm on about…AWESOME!!! My advice would be…if you can find this at a sensible price…GO FOR IT!
