There is variety in the number of soloists (concertos for one, two and four violins), style (Vivaldi's favourite fast-slow-fast, to be sure, but also three concertos in which he shows that he can write four-movement works), and mood (contrast the joyous opening movement of the first concerto with Simon Standage's haunting rendition of the slow movement of the ninth concerto). "L'estro armonico" was Vivaldi's first collection of concertos, and it is filled with the sheer joy of invention.
