While Miles Davis and Stan Getz were doing their cool things, there was another Yank chasing the pack - John Haley 'Zoot' Sims from California.
From four 1950s albums - The Four Brothers…. Together Again, From A To Z, Zoot and Whooeeee, we get the chance to hear arguably the best of Sims' work from the era, and maybe his long and illustrious career.
Aficionados will know that Sims was the first American performer to play a season at Ronnie Scotts in 1961, returning several times between then and finally in 1982. Unlike many of Sims' contemporaries who were very flamboyant, he kept his ears firmly rooted on melody and sleekness, and his work was a tribute to the foundations set by influences by Lester Young.
This collection focuses on selections from his 50s heyday opening with perky Four And One More from the Four Brothers - Together Again collection (1957) featuring long-time collaborator and saxophonist Al Cohn along with sax-man Herb Steward and baritone saxophonist Serge Chaloff. Second up is the stylised, laidback and cool So Blue featuring Steward, while The Swinging Door is full of jaunty interplay between the four pack.
A Quick One is a quick one indeed. The pulsating baselines and urgent drumming steer the proceedings for the sax boys to layer the melodic solos.
The Pretty One is the standout track so far, owing much to the Glenn Miller sound with simultaneous playing and ghosting piano work holding everything together.
Mediolistic from A-Z (1956) has a slightly edgier sax outing but melody is still very much at he heart of things.
Further in My Blues is a magnificent 3-minute wonder and by far the coolest track so far, principally due to the husky and sensual tonal value. East Of The Sun offers something different from the run-of-the mill previous five. The playing is steadier and more measured, bringing out the best in Sims' immaculate sonic phrasing.
Zoot (1956) opens with the quartet of Sims, pianist Johnny Williams, drummer Gus Johnson and bassist going for it on the eloquent but pacey 9.20 Special. Williams' piano solo is stylish and evolves around the strident rhythm section perfectly.
In sharp contrast, The Man I Love (George Gershwin) is handled with great respect with Sims giving a sublime master class on tenor sax.
From Whooeee (1956), his deft skills are also featured on the gentle swing of Lullaby Of The Leaves, though the tonal value is far huskier.
Title track Whooeee is a pulsating rush of blood with the rhythm section swinging behind Sims' sonic explorations boosted by Bob Brookmeyer's snorting valve trombone.
