Our alien-like cover picture of a paralarval octopus by Lilian Koh is one of many such organisms that divers covet in blackwater diving. The great thing about backwater diving is that there are no crowds; so in this issue, we try to cover stories of destinations that are action-packed yet peeps-free. UNESCO world heritage site Cocos Islands are undeniably remote, a place where pelagic marine life (read: scalloped hammerheads!) congregate in numbers that are off the scale along with a rich biodiversity of 1400 marine species with 27 endemic fish. Another gorgeous site to put on your bucket list would be Derawan, with its year-round manta rays and whale sharks, the world’s largest jellyfish lake and endless coral walls, the Derawan Archipelago might just be the best dive destination you’ve ever experienced. And who can resist Komodo with its frontier diving allure in the heart of the Coral Triangle, with a full range of encounters from macro to manta action that that will simply blow your mind. It won’t be too long before we find our next trending event in our playgrounds real soon.
