A Place Called Chiapas (1998)

While not the most appetizing technically, 'A Place Called Chiapas' is an interesting, engaging and informative documentary about the struggles of the EZLN movement (Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional, or Zapatista Army of National Liberation), an indigenous army that resides in the southern jungle region of Chiapas, Mexico, led by who is considered the post-modern Che Guevara, Subcomandante Marcos. Their cause is for the full independence of Latin America and against neoliberalism, in what they consider the '4th World War'.

The film tracks down the Zapatistas' rural lifestyle, as well as the diplomatic work of Subcomandante Marcos, and also the attacks of the Paz y Justicia movement ('Peace and Justice'), a paramilitar, right-wing anti-zapatista movement which had been terrorizing small indigenous shanytowns for years.




The film includes hard-coded subtitles. When english is spoken (mostly the narration by the director) there are no subtitles. This film is mostly in Spanish, but yes, both Spanish and Tzotzil speaking are subtitled.

Awards:
- in 1998 on AFI Fest Won Audience Award as Best Documentary Film;
- in 1999 on Canadian Society of Cinematographers Awards Nominated on CSC Award as Best Cinematography in Documentary;
- in 1999 on Genie Awards Won Genie as Best Feature Length Documentary;
- in 1999 on International Documentary Association Won IDA Award as Feature Documentaries.
